The Bachelor of Arts in International Relations Programme:
The Bachelor of Arts in International Relations (BA-IR) Programme is challenging, stimulating and practical. The three year course of study has the following objectives: to impart knowledge of basic concepts, theories and methods in International Relations; to develop in each student at least one area of special individual competence in International Relations; and to train students in research, analytical, and presentation / communication skills.
First year:
In transition from high school, students are introduced to the main subjects of International Relations, Macroeconomics, International Law, Human Rights, International Organisations and the United Nations. Their first year also includes general education courses such as introduction to Sociology, Philosophy, World History (in three parts), Literature and Politics, and World Religions. These courses are necessary to understand International Relations in a larger political, economical and cultural context. An emphasis is furthermore put on fundamental academic skills, such as research and writing skills, communication methodology and critical analysis.
Second year:
This year involves the further deepening of general scholarly development while serving as an introduction to more specialized subjects. There are progressively fewer general education courses and students have the possibility to become more familiar with the work of the United Nations and other International Organisations.
Third year:
The final year of the programme focuses on the application of specific International Relations sub-disciplines in context. The courses provide in-depth knowledge of Human Rights issues in country-specific contexts, a current political event (e.g. The US elections), a specific conflict (e.g. Darfur) or a specific regional analysis course (e.g. South-eastern Europe).
By the end of year three, students have gained a solid knowledge in the key areas of International Relations. They understand the process of conducting and presenting research projects. They have learned to write academic papers to the highest academic standards, and to think critically. They have gained the necessary communication and language skills to present and defend a point of view during a discussion, to accept and value different opinions and to negotiate compromise.
Students studying for the BA-IR take six courses per week during each fourteen-week trimester. Each course carries three credits points in accord with international norms. An annual study trip and other special events/study experiences throughout the academic year are mandatory components of the program.
A normal year of full-time study, therefore, earns the student 60 credit points towards the necessary graduation total of 180 credits, achievable in three years.
Length of programme: 9 trimesters (3 academic years)
Course load per trimester: 6 courses (18 ECTS)
Total ECTS per programme: 180 ECTS
1 course = 3 ECTS credits

14 weeks x 3.5 hours homework and preparation = 49 hours
Total: 75 hours of study
