Economics and Business Economics is perfect for students who want to rise to the challenge of seeing beyond the obvious: who want to be international in their outlook and learn to analyze economic and business developments during their studies. Students who will end up holding positions at multinational companies in order to investigate how that company will fare in a given country, students who can explain to national and international organizations how to respond to regional laws and customs.
The Bachelor´s degree programme in Economics and Business Economics is a three year, 180 ECTS credits programme taught entirely in English. Your first year of E&BE will provide you with the fundamentals of Economics and Business Economics. After your first year, you choose one of the two specializations: Economics or International Economics & Business. If you specialize in Economics, you will be trained to become a qualified Economist, with a broad theoretical background and the skills to apply that theory in practice.
If you choose International Economics & Business, you choose a career as an economist with a strongly international profile and a focus on the issues from international economics and business strategy. Both in Economics and in International Economics and Business you will have the opportunity to spend a period of six months abroad, taking economics and business courses (mostly electives of your own choosing) at a foreign university. The Faculty of Economics and Business has excellent international contacts. Cooperation takes place with partner institutions throughout Europe, as well as in countries outside Europe like the United States and Canada, Australia and New Zealand, China and Korea, South Africa and various countries in Latin America.
After three years of study, you will graduate with a BSc degree in Economics and Business Economics, which will give you access to a number of Master´s degree programmes. You could graduate with an MSc in Economics or an MSc in International Economics and Business, which provides you with great opportunities on the national and international job market. But you could also apply for Business Administration, International Business and Management, a Research Master or become a teacher of Economics.
The programme Economics and Business Economics helps you develop the knowledge and skills necessary to solve economic problems. This broad Bachelor´s programme focuses on (international) economic theory. But you will also learn about policy, theory and activities of international organizations/companies.
Economics & Business Eonomics is taught in English and therefore accessible to international students. At the moment, one third of the students are from abroad and this number seems to increase. From the very first day, you will study in an international environment!
The first year is similar for all students. In the second year of study, you can choose from two specializations: the specialization Economics and the specialization International Economics and Business.
Economics
The specialization Eonomics is an all-round study programme. With the knowledge of economic theory, you are able to answer organizational questions like: what is efficient? How can we organize work as well as possible? Or: how can we improve? Theory is not everything: an economist must be able to apply it.
Economists know how a firm works and how demand and supply influence each other and the prices. They are experts on consumer behaviour and producers (microeconomics) and on national and international economics (macroeconomics).
On the basis of financial data, they are able to take responsible decisions and plan investments. Mathematics and statistics are indispensable knowledge for solving economic problems. Large amounts of financial data, for example, are only useful when presented well-organized and combined with the right statistical relations. It goes without saying that ICT knowledge is also essential for economists.
International Economics & Business
The specialization International Economics & Business (IE&B) is an all-round programme with a clear international focus. You will expand your knowledge of economics and at the same time you become familiar with a number of the most exciting issues in the research fields of international economics and business economics.
IE&B prepares you for the international labour market. Not only business, but also the labour market globalizes: new personnel is not just recruited nationally. Companies are looking for people who are capable of working in international business, who understand the local culture and who can work in an international team.
Surprisingly enough, also governments and small to medium-sized enterprises are increasingly recruiting people with an international orientation. In order to meet the new demands of the international labour market, the specialization IE&B combines subjects from international economics and international business, pays attention to languages and practical skills and schedules a period of study abroad.
