What are the best locations for radio telescopes in Europe? If we want to study the stars properly, we need not just one radio telescope but a whole network of them. European countries and businesses are currently building just such a network. How do you decide where to place the various radio telescopes?
Econometricians can help. They can construct a mathematical model that takes account of all sorts of aspects - not only the optimum depiction of the entire night sky, but also the construction costs, possible disturbance of the radio waves from busy cities, the suitability of the construction site, etc. Such models enable econometricians to work out the best locations and solve numerous complex and practical problems.
Mathematical models of practical problems are at the heart of Econometrics. Economic questions don´t usually have a straightforward answer but by formulating the question in a model you will try to find an answer that can be defended. Researchers have to be able to think logically and analytically. It also helps if you like solving complex problems and puzzles.
Mathematics and statistics are crucial tools and thus the challenging combination of economics, mathematics and statistics forms the basis of the degree programme. You will also study economics and work a lot with computers. In Econometrics, IT is all about applications - it is a tool rather than a subject in its own right.
The programme for the first two and a half years is fixed, but then you are given a lot of choice and can choose your own specialization.
In the final year of the Bachelor´s programme and in the related Master´s programme you can choose one of the following specializations:
* Econometrics
* Operations Research
* Actuarial Studies.
Econometrics is a small, close-knit degree programme where lecturers and students all know each other. Right from the first year you will be doing lots of practicals, which simplifies the transfer to university. The practicals enable you to practise skills such as presentation, co-operation and reasoning.
