Should development aid be limited to emergency humanitarian relief? To what extent has the end of the Cold War affected Europe´s security position in the world? Is the European Union still manageable now the number of member states has further increased? How can cross-border environmental pollution be tackled? Should all Central and Eastern European countries become NATO members? If you study international relations and international organization (IR/IO), you will deal with these types of issues. The programme focuses on international relations, in particular on the function and the role of international organizations.
The BA programme takes three years and is of an interdisciplinary nature, in other words, the programme is provided by different faculties. The political history modules form the core of your degree programme. The law and economics modules that you follow in addition are essential to understanding current international politics.
In the first year, you will follow core modules, such as history of international relations, introduction to law, introduction to economics and political science. In addition, you will train your written and oral skills and you will start learning a foreign language of your choice (French, Spanish, German or English).
In the second year, you will deepen your knowledge of the political history, economics and law components. You will also carry on with your foreign language.
In the third year, you will be able to specialize in one of the following topics: international security, international political economics, European cooperation and integration, safety and theory of international relations, international order and global governance. In addition, you will choose a Minor in another discipline. You will round off your degree by writing a thesis.
After your BA, you can continue your studies with a Master´s degree programme. In the one-year Short Master´s degree programme you will go into more depth on one of the themes above and you will do a placement. In the two-year Research Master´s programme you will concentrate on conducting research in the field of international relations.
