This degree enables holders to specialise in any of the following areas: educational environments (learning and teaching languages), business environments (management of specialised multilingual communication), social environments (cultural mediation, linguistic normalisation), description and comparison of languages (both the student's own and foreign languages) and technological applications (development and management of computer programmes applied to linguistic tasks). In short, this interdisciplinary course provides the skills for working as a linguistic technician in institutions and businesses in various areas, in press offices, in communication departments, in text editing, in cultural mediation work, in language teaching, etc.
The degree in Applied Languages is a qualification adapted to the characteristics of today's society, which is increasingly multilingual, global and digital. This course is new in Spain, although it has been on offer in other European countries for some years. First, unlike classic philology studies, this degree provides training in the productive and receptive field in two or more languages, so that graduates are able to work in professional environments in which multilingualism is an essential feature. Second, unlike linguistics or humanities, the degree in Applied Languages has a highly practical outlook, focusing on today's communication problems. Third, unlike the Translation course, which focus basically on the practice of translation, this degree is more diversified in terms of the work done in linguistics: it does not only include translation work, but also covers writing, correction and editing of texts, project management, terminology management, cultural mediation, etc. In short, the degree in Applied Languages provides multilingual, interdisciplinary and practical training for students interested in languages and their applications. It is a degree that is fully meets the requirements of the European Higher Education Area (the Bologna declaration) and is therefore officially valid throughout Europe.
