The Faculty of Applied Arts at DIT is uniquely placed in Ireland to offer this new three year BA Honours in the theory and context of the creative industries. The Faculty´s long established reputation for high quality education in the creative and performing arts has always been underpinned by a solid grounding in related theory. This flexible, interdisciplinary programme of study has been designed to capitalise on that tradition. The programme is suitable for anyone interested in the arts and creative industries and allows individuals who have an interest in a specific area, (e.g., Music & Drama or Art & Design) to follow their interests by building a specialised degree pathway for themselves in years two and three. Students on this programe will receive a grounding in the theory of the creative and performing arts supported by relevant modules in Law and Business, giving the degree a practical, real-world focus. They will also be in the unique position of studying alongside students taking practice-based programmes in the Schools of Media, Art & Design and the Conservatory of Music & Drama, and so will be immersed in an atmosphere of creative practice.
Some modules are core (compulsory) and others are optional. In Year One, students take subjects in Media Arts & Journalism, Art & Design, and Music & Drama, supported by core modules in Law and Business. Students choose a further optional module in Year One from either the main Arts subject areas listed above or a range of languages.
The core modules in Business and Law are a feature of all three years of the programme, as is a regular tutorial designed to help students understand the relevance and real-life application of the subjects taken.
In Year Two and Year Three, students may choose to take all or most of their optional modules from one of the main Arts subject areas (Media Arts & Journalism, Art & Design or Music & Drama), or continue to study a wider range of subjects as in Year One.
The Faculty of Applied Arts offers many Erasmus and other exchanges. Students may choose to avail of an appropriate exchange in Year 2 in consultation with the relevant academic staff.
