Making it in the world of acting and drama is little more than a dream for most. However, for graduates of the three year, full-time Honours BA in Drama (Performance), one of Ireland´s few remaining full-time acting programmes, living the dream can become a reality. Graduates of this programme are confident performers, generous facilitators and effective communicators of aspects of drama and have been successfully treading the boards in theatres in Ireland and abroad in addition to successes on the big screen.
The programme is aimed at anybody who is interested in committing themselves to acting. While performance is at the core of the programme, there are also rigorous academic demands on students, including scholarly research and written analyses, in order to strengthen and support the performance and drama facilitation work. Core areas studied throughout the three years are Acting (including Improvisation, Stanislavski and Acting to Camera), Drama and Performance in Cultural Contexts (including Ensemble Production, Irish Drama and Modernism, Renaissance to Romance, Critical Analysis), The Acted Word (including Voice and Speech, Shakespeare and Radio Drama), Drama in Social and Learning Contexts (including Drama Facilitation and Theatre in Education) and Supporting the Body (Movement, Singing, Dance and Combat).
Students may avail of study abroad opportunities through the student exchange scheme with Columbia College Chicago.
The programme is divided into the following strands or major areas of focus:
* Acting
* Drama and Performance in Cultural Contexts
* The Acted Word
* Drama in Social and Learning Contexts
* Developing the Body.
This is a practical programme, with acting and performance at the core of all of these areas. Within this emphasis, students are expected to reflect critically on all aspects of their practical work and nearly all courses have an analytical component. The strands outlined above are interrelated and therefore not always rigidly delineated. Students partake in formalised theatre visits and are encouraged in their coursework to make connections between the areas.
Year One
The focus of the first two semesters is on work on the self and cohering the year group, which provides the foundation for a dynamic educational environment. Students are introduced to the fundamental skills and concepts of performance and drama. At the end of the year, students participate in a small-scale ensemble production.
Year Two
In Semesters three & four small-group studio work is emphasized more sharply and the students´ individual performance skills are developed within contrasting contexts.
Year Three
In the final two semesters, students are expected to begin to integrate the various skills and concepts they have acquired from the previous years. At the end of the first semester, students participate in a small-scale public production. In the final semester, students participate in a full-scale production, create an acting recital and write a thesis on a research area of their own choosing. Outside of their assessed performances, students will also participate in a performance showcase for members of the drama industries.
