The main objective of the degree is to train professionals able to work in journalism in any news and communication medium. This involves training the future graduates in order to meet the foreseeable changes in the world of communication from the perspective of social customs and from the technological viewpoint. The course also aims to encourage the future professionals to undertake an in-depth consideration of journalism as a profession which must be a guarantee of democracy, civic responsibility and social cohesion.
* Sound training in a specific area, instead of the dispersed knowledge and "encyclopaedic culture" that has been typical of journalism degrees to date. Students must initially choose one of the following four areas: Humanities, Politics, Economics or Law.
* Training in the fundamentals and skills required in journalism, in all facets and of all types (press, Internet, radio, television, news agencies, etc.).
* Inclusion of the theoretical tools necessary to analyse and understand the media environment in overall terms.
* Emphasis on professional specialisation, by means of optional subjects related with the various areas and course types.
* Compulsory internship, with a stage lasting at least one term in a communication medium, a news agency or an institutional communication office.
* Encouragement of student mobility, especially in stages in foreign universities or media.
* The opportunity to complete the studies by means of various course types forming part of the European cycles structure:
- Admission to official master's degrees in various areas of specialised journalism.
- Admission to a research master's degree and doctorate.
- A dual degree qualification after studying for two supplementary years.
