One of Ireland´s most popular third-level programmes, Media Arts caters for students whose ambition is to work in film, broadcasting, or the wider media and cultural industries.
The programme balances practical classes in television, radio, film, and script writing, with academic modules that give students the theory and cultural context essential to building a successful media career.
Media Arts students often work around campus and the city using professional cameras and sound recording equipment, making their own TV and radio programmes, as well as short films. As viewers, students are already immersed in media culture, which they come to understand more deeply and critique more keenly through taking theory classes.
A focus on languages (Gaeilge, French) enables students to work through their chosen language, abroad or in the growing Irish language media sector. Some students may also have the opportunity to study overseas for one semester through participation in student exchange programmes.
Using modern facilities, students develop professional production skills that can be applied in various media environments. Throughout the four years of study, students originate and develop documentary, drama and radio projects through diverse media formats. By graduation, students have initiated and completed projects to professional production standards. Many graduates have gone on to win awards in national and international competitions.
Some modules are core (compulsory) and others are optional. As students progress through Year Three, they begin to specialise in the practical stream.
Students take a combination of Production, Critical Studies, and Language Studies throughout the programme. In the first year, students study foundational modules in cultural, narrative and film theory and history. They also receive introductory level training in video and audio production, stills photography, and creative writing.
Second years are introduced to television and narrative film production, scriptwriting, and develop their audio production skills. In year two and three, students also advance their critical studies and language skills, and in third year, students begin their specialisation in radio, documentary and drama production.
Fourth year students concentrate on their individual academic research, writing their dissertation and language projects, then shifting their focus to their final production projects within radio, drama, or documentary.
