Ireland´s success in traditional, pop, rock and classical music on an international scale is renowned worldwide. For many successful musicians it is the support and knowledge of a music teacher that will encourage them to use their musical talents.
This programme is intended for those wishing to become teachers of music in post-primary schools and provides them with the necessary academic and professional background. As the programme is taught by DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama and TCD´s Departments of Teacher Education, History and Music, students become full members of both DIT and TCD.
The programme requires a high standard in performance and provides a solid grounding in harmony, counterpoint, composition, orchestration, analysis and history of music. A wider experience of practical music making is ensured by participation in ensembles ranging from choral society and chamber choir to orchestra and concert band.
History is a compulsory subject in the first year and students are encouraged to continue with it in subsequent years, particularly if they wish to enhance their employment prospects. All students undertake teaching practice in secondary schools in the Dublin area throughout the programme. Supervised practice in all aspects of classroom teaching is provided, in addition to instrumental/vocal practice.
A basic feature of the programme is personal development in music, evoking the ability to arouse the interest and enthusiasm of pupils. Students of the programme are encouraged to engage in ensemble work and opportunities to perform are provided, offering realistic goals for all, including the exceptionally gifted.
Applications MUST be submitted by 1 February of the proposed year of entry. Please note that students should apply through CAO code TR009.
Applicants will be required to attend an entrance examination provisionally scheduled for late March of the proposed year of entry. On the basis of the examination results, some applicants will be called to attend an interview/audition before final selections are made, usually the second week of May. Performance, comprising sight reading and sight singing, features as one element of the interview/audition.
