At the Prince Claus Conservatoire you will be trained to become a professional musician. The balanced curriculum will offer you an informal setting that is full of character.

You will acquire a sound theoretical basis and develop practical musical skills in the specializations of Classical Music or Jazz. The Prince Claus Conservatoire is involved in large international cooperative projects that attract many international students and guests. For all specializations you will receive instruction from lecturers who, in addition to having extensive teaching experience, also have national or international performance careers. You will also regularly receive lessons from renowned guest lecturers from all over the world. Everything at the conservatoire revolves around three values: Performing, Teaching, and Entrepreneurship (P-T-E). Graduates of the Prince Claus Conservatoire are well prepared for professional practice and find work easily as, for example, performing musicians (solo, in an ensemble or in an orchestra), music teachers, conductors, composers, producers, studio musicians, etc. Many of our graduates combine a musical career with teaching.

Joris Teepe and his colleagues are a faculty of seasoned professional musicians who have played with many of the greatest musicians in jazz. They are part of the rich musical community of New York City, the city that is the centre of the jazz world. This life experience and commitment directly effects how they teach; the ‘New York comes to Groningen’ program is a more pragmatic, performanceoriented way of studying jazz than what is often taught at other conservatoires. This means that when you enter the conservatoire, you will be performing from the first day. The theory that you study is applied to real playing situations, and in general classes are focussed on making you ready to play jazz on the highest professional level. Piano study, lessons in arranging and compositions all find quick applications in studio projects and student performances.

Your main subject forms the central theme in your course of study, but playing in ensembles (including a wide range of jazz groups, fusion, latin and soul bands as well as traditional big bands) is an important part of the curriculum. Student-led ensembles are plentiful, both for required concerts and exams as well as extra- curricular jam sessions, world music ensembles and other bands that offer a stunning array of original directions in improvised music. These bands are performing regularly at the many jam sessions,clubs and concert venues in Groningen and around the Netherlands. For inspiration, world renowned jazz musicians appear regularly in De Oosterpoort (cultural center) and in the club circuit around Groningen. In the student’s third year, many students go to exchange programs with schools in Europe and the United States. And to really get to know the New York Jazz scene, a school trip is organized each year to visit New York and attend performances in clubs around the city.

Jazz as a career

After completing the program, you will be able to work in a wide variety of musical ensembles. After your graduation you are equipped to start a career as a musician, performing in various ensembles and in all styles of jazz. You know how to promote yourself and your group, you can compose and arrange music for all kinds of ensembles and orchestra’s. If you complete all the teacher training course you can teach at a music school or privately.

Music Styles

Even though the focus of the Jazz department is ‘Jazz’, many other contemporary styles of music are studied, such as fusion, latin and soul. We also make use of the expertise of the classical department of the conservatoire.

Workshops and Concerts by the New York Jazz Faculty

every Monday the visiting New York teacher of that week presents a concert and workshop. Both the concert and workshop are free of charge and open to the public.

Lunch Concerts by Jazz Students

Every weekday a lunch concert is given by jazz students. A different student acts as the musical director of each day’s concert, giving students the opportunity to increase their performance experience and prepare for situations in which they will present their own compositions and arrangements. These concerts bring a lively atmosphere to the school and a supportive environment and sense of community to the jazz department. These concerts are also open to the public and free of charge.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Grants and Scholarships

Dutch national grant system ('Studiefinanciering')

There is a national grant system in the Netherlands, called 'studiefinanciering', for students who are enrolled with a Dutch higher education institution. To be eligible for such a grant you:

  • have to have the Dutch nationality and

  • have to be younger than 30

Foreign students are generally not eligible for such a grant. Only EU-students under certain conditions can make use of ‘studiefinanciering’.

Grants for EU/EEA students

Fee-paying EU/EEA students who will start their degree programme in the academic year 2012/2013 may apply for a so-called "collegegeldkrediet" (tuition fees credit).

This is an interest-bearing loan from the Dutch government to cover the costs of the Dutch higher education tuition fees. The loan will have to be repaid (in instalments) after the student has graduated.

Students can apply for a 'collegegeldkrediet'' with the IB-Groep, the Dutch organization that is responsible for student loans and grants. The IB-Groep provides information in English at www.ib-groep.nl. We advise you to check the site regularly for up-to-date information.

The authority responsible for this grant is the IB-Groep. We try to provide you with the correct information on the conditions for obtaining the grant. However, no rights can be derived from the information given here.

Huygens Scholarship Programme

The prestigious Huygens Scholarship Programme of the Dutch Ministery of Education, Culture and Science is open to excellent students from all countries. It is aimed at talented students who want to come to the Netherlands in the final phase of their bachelor’s studies or during their master’s studies.

The scholarship covers:

  • a generous reimbursement of tuition fees
  • a monthly allowance of € 1,380 (this includes a standard contribution towards healthcare insurance);
  • visa fees (standard contribution);
  • a one-off payment towards international travel costs (standard contribution based on nationality);

Applicants first need to be accepted by the study programme of their choice. They can apply for an Huygens scholarship through Nuffic (Netherlands Organization for International Cooperation in Higher Education), on the basis of a nomination by Hanze (UAS). As the Huygens Scholarship Programme is aimed at highly talented students, Hanze (UAS) will normally only nominate students that have obtained excellent results in all their previous studies.

Currently, no applications can be submitted because the issuance of new grants is put on hold due to the fact that measures of austerity have been implemented by the Dutch government following the negative global economic climate.

The Netherlands Fellowship Programmes

Hanze (UAS) also participates in the Netherlands Fellowship Programme (NFP), which supports students from developing countries. The fellowships are granted for the duration of the programme and cover the tuition fees and the costs of international travel, subsistence, books and health insurance.

China Programme

China Programme scholarships are meant for outstanding Chinese students who have completed a Bachelor’s programme and want to come to the Netherlands to do a Master’s programme. Students who wish to be considered for a China Programme scholarship must apply to the China Scholarship Council in Beijing. The programme is highly competitive; only 25 scholarships are awarded each academic year. A national selection committee decides which candidates will be awarded a scholarship.

StuNed scholarships

StuNed scholarships are available for Indonesian professionals with at least two years work experience in a development-related organisation who want to come to the Netherlands to do a Master’s programme or a short course.

Emergency fund

Hanze (UAS) has set up an emergency fund for students who are forced to stop their studies because they have run into financial difficulties through no fault of their own. They can appeal to the Emergency Fund for an interest-free loan or a gift. Students who want to apply for a contribution from this fund should contact the student counsellor.

Student and instrument fundThe conservatoire has a student fund and an instrument fund. Students can request money for such things as masterclasses or other educational activities abroad, or to help purchase or maintain an instrument.
