The field of activity of civil engineers has greatly expanded in recent years. Whereas in the past the safety and profitability of building structures was the top priority, today and in the future the social, urban and regional planning, legal and ecological aspects of the planning, construction, operation, preservation and disposal of structures and facilities are becoming more and more important and will continue to do so in the future.
The building and construction industry is very important for society, the environment
and the national economy. Therefore graduates of the Civil Engineering program
have a lot of responsibility in their professional work in the tug-of-war of politics,
society, the environment, the economy and science. The wide range of knowledge of the field and the rapid technological development of the different disciplines of civil engineering require a great deal of technical knowledge and marked social and
economic competences of graduates.
The Faculty of Civil Engineering Sciences at Graz University of Technology supplies
the knowledge that meets these demands by
* research-based, scientific teaching,
* interdisciplinary problem-solving methods
* and a very practical approach.
A first-class educational objective and thus the goal of the professional education and training is the ability to independently develop scientifically sound solutions to subject specific problems. At the same time, the development of social competence and a sense of being responsible to oneself are taken into consideration and promoted in an appropriate way.
Graduates of Civil Engineering programs at Graz University of Technology receive a
research-guided education and training in all the subject relevant fields as well as
scientific, economic and practical competences. It includes a wide range of
fundamentals in the bachelor's program and concentrations in the corresponding
sub-areas that build on these fundamentals in the master's program.
In view of the future professional life and the principles of a university education and training, a high degree of independence and responsibility to oneself is thus required of students.
The bachelor´s programme lasts six semesters. Each semester includes 30 ECTS credits worth of courses and projects.
In the first two semesters, the focus of the range of courses is mathematical-scientific and engineering fundamentals like mathematics, mechanics, physics, informatics, surveying and structural design. Starting in the third semester, the fundamentals of civil engineering are taught in the following specialist fields:
* Structural analysis, building materials basics, building construction and building physics
* Geo-technical engineering (soil mechanics, foundation engineering, rock mechanics, rock engineering, engineering geology)
* Construction (steel construction, wood construction, reinforced concrete)
* Infrastructure and the environment (traffic engineering, sanitary engineering), hydraulic engineering and water management, as well as
* The construction industry and project management
Students who complete the bachelor´s programme are awarded a "Bachelor of Science" (BSc) degree.
Students consolidate and expand the knowledge they have already acquired by specializing in one of the following four master´s programmes:
* Civil Engineering and Structural Engineering
* Civil Engineering, Geotechnics and Hydraulics
* Civil Engineering, Environment and Transportation
* Construction Management and Civil Engineering
1. The general university entrance qualification:
a. Austrian secondary school leaving certificate
b. University entrance qualification certificate
c. a foreign certificate that is nostrified in Austria or a secondary school leaving certificate that is accepted as being equivalent based upon the rector´s decision
d. a certificate that proves you have completed at least a three-year course of study at an accredited Austrian or foreign post-secondary educational institution (e.g. university of applied sciences study programmes)
2. The special university entrance qualification
This concerns supplementary examinations to those secondary school leaving certificates issued in Austria, (e.g. "descriptive geometry" supplementary examination). Those who have foreign secondary school leaving certificates have to prove that they have the right to a study place in the same study programme in the country which issued the secondary school leaving examination.
3. German proficiency
Persons, whose first language is not German, have to prove German proficiency. If you cannot present proof of this, then you have to take a supplementary examination, which has to be completed before admission to a degree study programme.
