Dramatic changes can be expected in health care. Life expectancy is also increasing due to the higher quality of medical care. Accordingly, there will be great demands on future medical care and a highly efficient health care system which makes use of state-of-the-art technical equipment in prevention, diagnosis, and therapy.
Biomedical engineering provides the necessary know-how, the required products and the latest solutions in information technology. This includes pace-makers and all other medical implants as well as magnetic resonance imaging or surgical "navigation aids" that make it possible to watch an operation on the monitor. However, biomedical engineering also works on the molecular level and deals with the "design" of molecules, among others. This means that biomedical engineers examine possible ways to use suitable molecules for the treatment of illnesses.
Even though fundamental biological and medical knowledge is indispensable for the work of biomedical engineers, Biomedical Engineering is still a technical programme! Knowledge of Latin is not required. However, mathematics and physics are prerequisites just as is an interest in technical problems. And those who enjoy working in interdisciplinary subject areas and co-operating on an interdisciplinary level have the necessary prerequisites to be successful in the study programme.
The Biomedical Engineering bachelor´s programme lasts six semesters. Students, who have completed the study programme, are awarded a "BSc" (Bachelor of Science). The bachelor´s programme is the basis of the subsequent four-semester master's programme which gives students the possibility to specialize in "Health Care Engineering", "Bioimaging & Bioinstrumentation", "Bioinformatics & Medical Informatics", and "Molecular Bioengineering".
The "Biomedical Engineering" bachelor´s programme provides students with the following competences:
* Profound knowledge of medical-biological and mathematical-scientific fundamentals
* Biomedical fundamentals
* Fundamentals of electrical engineering and computer science
* Understanding of the language and the content of these subject areas
* Capability to work together and solve problems on an interdisciplinary level
* Critical and analytical thinking in order to find adequate solutions to problems.
1. The general university entrance qualification:
a. Austrian secondary school leaving certificate
b. University entrance qualification certificate
c. a foreign certificate that is nostrified in Austria or a secondary school leaving certificate that is accepted as being equivalent based upon the rector´s decision
d. a certificate that proves you have completed at least a three-year course of study at an accredited Austrian or foreign post-secondary educational institution (e.g. university of applied sciences study programmes)
2. The special university entrance qualification
This concerns supplementary examinations to those secondary school leaving certificates issued in Austria, (e.g. "descriptive geometry" supplementary examination). Those who have foreign secondary school leaving certificates have to prove that they have the right to a study place in the same study programme in the country which issued the secondary school leaving examination.
3. German proficiency
Persons, whose first language is not German, have to prove German proficiency. If you cannot present proof of this, then you have to take a supplementary examination, which has to be completed before admission to a degree study programme.
