Location of Graz University of Technology (TU Graz)

The Geomatics field of study (German abbreviation:Geo-IT) is divided into a bachelor`s and master´s programme and thus follows the innovative concept of a multi-stage university course of study. It offers an education conforming to EU standards with a compact range of courses, short study time and market-oriented teaching content.

The six-semester bachelor´s programme in Geomatics Engineering provides a well-founded university basic education and ends with the degree of Bachelor of Science (BSc). The master´s programme in Geomatics Science lasts four semesters and is a scientific area of concentration. It is completed with the degree of Diplomingenieurin or Diplomingenieur (Dipl.-Ing.)

The objective of the Geomatics course of study at Graz University of Technology is to provide a pre-professional scientific training in modelling, compilation, analysis and
visualisation of information for references in space, time and location. A variety of terrestrial, aerial and satellitesupported methods are used for compiling geographic
information. In turn, these provide geographical data which serves as a basis for communal, regional and global information systems. These are additionally required
for a number of positioning and navigation applications as well as geodesy, determination of the earth`s gravitational field, and the monitoring of the earth`s global processes.

The ability to evaluate such processes against a scientific background is a requirement. The range of knowledge provided by Geomatics and the resulting skills, from compilation to analysis and communication, are thus incorporated in the context of modern technologies of which information technology is an essential segment.

Contents

The bachelor´s programme (6 semesters) is a sound education in the use of geo-information, positioning and navigation technologies and helps students to get a start on their career. The programme is mainly comprised of required subjects and is structured in the following clear and manageable blocks:

* Geoinformatics (sound informatics education, practice-oriented application),
* Technology (acquisition of geo-data, sensor technology, satellite technologies),
* Scientific fundamentals (mathematics, physics, geosciences),
* General fundamentals (business administration, law, project management, rhetoric, presentation skills)

The application-oriented nature of the programme shows the students quite plainly possibilities to implement their theoretical knowledge. Students who successfully complete the programme are awarded a "bakk.techn." (equivalent to a Bachelor of Engineering) degree. Advanced programmes such as the four semester master´s programme Geomatics Science are of course possible after graduation.

Requirements

1. The general university entrance qualification:

a. Austrian secondary school leaving certificate

b. University entrance qualification certificate

c. a foreign certificate that is nostrified in Austria or a secondary school leaving certificate that is accepted as being equivalent based upon the rector´s decision

d. a certificate that proves you have completed at least a three-year course of study at an accredited Austrian or foreign post-secondary educational institution (e.g. university of applied sciences study programmes)

2. The special university entrance qualification

This concerns supplementary examinations to those secondary school leaving certificates issued in Austria, (e.g. "descriptive geometry" supplementary examination). Those who have foreign secondary school leaving certificates have to prove that they have the right to a study place in the same study programme in the country which issued the secondary school leaving examination.

3. German proficiency

Persons, whose first language is not German, have to prove German proficiency. If you cannot present proof of this, then you have to take a supplementary examination, which has to be completed before admission to a degree study programme.
