As the saying goes there has to be good chemistry. And when this is the case, people will find new solutions to problems that will make life easier. However, one has to learn the basics first. And these are exactly the basic fundamentals that students get in the chemistry bachelor's programme. The requisite know-how ranges from theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the field of chemistry and neighbouring disciplines (e.g. physics, mathematics) to an understanding of chemical methods to scientific "chemical thinking".

Chemistry is an exact science. Thus, precise work is a central quality of future chemists. A prerequisite for students is to be generally interested in the natural sciences, too. Those who are good at working with their hands, enjoy experimenting, know their way around computers, and also have the psychological stamina needed for intensive laboratory work have the necessary prerequisites to be successful in the study programme.

NAWI Graz - Competence to the Second Power

The Chemistry programme at NAWI Graz is offered as a joint programme of Graz University of Technology and Karl-Franzens University. For students this means that they can profit from the outstanding achievements and the competences of two universities - an absolute novelty in Austria!

Contents

The Chemistry bachelor´s programme consists of one stage of study that lasts a total of six semesters and includes an introductory phase. After students complete the six-semester study programme, they are awarded a "BSc" (Bachelor of Science).

The Chemistry bachelor´s programme is the basis of a four-semester master's programme in Chemistry, Technical Chemistry or Chemical and Pharmaceutical Engineering. The master´s programme will be offered by NAWI Graz starting in winter semester 2007/08. Students, who have completed the bachelor´s programme, are allowed to transfer to the master's programmes in Biochemistry and Molecular Biomedical Sciences, Molecular Microbiology, Biotechnology.

The bachelor´s programme in Chemistry consists of a single stage of study with an introductory phase and lasts a total of six semesters.

The following expertise is imparted:

* Well-founded knowledge and understanding of the methods of analytic, inorganic and physical chemistry, and includes adjacent fields of technical and scientific areas and their application in science and technology;
* Complementary knowledge in the areas of physics and mathematics;
* Computer-supported investigation of relevant problems;
* Scientific approaches and their application;
* The ability to apply acquired knowledge universally and at an interdisciplinary level;
* Critical examination of unexpected results and relevant new developments;
* An awareness of possible ethical, social and economic effects of the development of professional activities;

d. a certificate that proves you have completed at least a three-year course of study at an accredited Austrian or foreign post-secondary educational institution (e.g. university of applied sciences study programmes)

2. The special university entrance qualification

This concerns supplementary examinations to those secondary school leaving certificates issued in Austria, (e.g. "descriptive geometry" supplementary examination). Those who have foreign secondary school leaving certificates have to prove that they have the right to a study place in the same study programme in the country which issued the secondary school leaving examination.
