Why do strawberries taste so good? A question that not all sciences can answer. Not so with molecular biology: Actually, it is reactions on the molecular level that are responsible for the fruity-sweet taste. And this is exactly where molecular biology starts: It is situated at the interface between biology and chemistry and forms the basis of a number of applications, for instance, in biotechnology, genetic engineering or biomedicine. The bachelor´s programme provides future molecular biologists with fundamental knowledge. The spectrum ranges from general scientific knowledge in chemistry and biology to microbiology, cell biology, molecular biology, and genetics.
Just as in any other scientific programme, students of molecular biology have to have a general interest in the natural sciences and be able to work precisely. And those who are good at working with their hands, enjoy experimenting, know their way around computers, and also have the psychological stamina needed for intensive laboratory work have the necessary rerequisites to be successful in the study programme.
NAWI Graz - Competence to the Second Power
The Molecular Biology programme at NAWI Graz is offered as a joint programme of Graz University of Technology and the Karl-Franzens University. For students this means that they can profit from the outstanding achievements and the competences of two universities - an absolute novelty in Austria!
The Molecular Biology bachelor´s programme consists of one stage of study that lasts a total of six semesters and includes an introductory phase. Students, who have completed the study programme, are awarded a "BSc" (Bachelor of Science). Completion of the bachelor´s programme makes interesting combinations with other fields of study possible.
And since the academic degree is internationally recognized, there is no problem in continuing with the programme in any other country. However, the "BSc" is only the first academic degree, and by itself, it does not provide students with sufficient professional qualification.
The Molecular Biology bachelor´s programme is the basis of the subsequent four-semester master's programme. Students consolidate and expand the knowledge they have already acquired by specializing in Biotechnology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biomedicine as well as in Molecular Microbiology. The objective is to educate and train optimally prepared molecular biologists.
Admission to the programme is granted either at Graz University of Technology or at the Karl-Franzens University. There is no admission restriction at the moment, but a limeted number of working places in laboratories!
Admission to a degree or bachelor´s study programme requires:
1. The general university entrance qualification:
a. Austrian secondary school leaving certificate
b. University entrance qualification certificate
c. a foreign certificate that is nostrified in Austria or a secondary school leaving certificate that is accepted as being equivalent based upon the rector´s decision
d. a certificate that proves you have completed at least a three-year course of study at an accredited Austrian or foreign post-secondary educational institution (e.g. university of applied sciences study programmes)
2. The special university entrance qualification
This concerns supplementary examinations to those secondary school leaving certificates issued in Austria, (e.g. "descriptive geometry" supplementary examination). Those who have foreign secondary school leaving certificates have to prove that they have the right to a study place in the same study programme in the country which issued the secondary school leaving examination.
3. German proficiency
Persons, whose first language is not German, have to prove German proficiency. If you cannot present proof of this, then you have to take a supplementary examination, which has to be completed before admission to a degree study programme.
