4.5 billion years - hardly any other science´s research interests stretch across such a long time. But in earth sciences everything is measured by different standards. Earth sciences provide important fundamentals for understanding our planet. The bachelor´s programme in Earth Sciences is all about fundamentals: The range of knowledge taught is extremely broad and ranges from general scientific and subject-specific fundamentals to palaeontology, mineralogy, petrology, and hydrogeology. The latter deals with the water in the earth´s crust and is a new one-of-a-kind focus in Austria.

Students in the Earth Sciences programme have to show a general interest in the natural sciences and know how to do meticulous work. And there is something else that future earth scientists should have: They should enjoy working in nature since many of the exercises take place outdoors. In addition, those who enjoy experimenting and know their way around computers have the necessary prerequisites to be successful in the study programme.

NAWI Graz - Competence to the Second Power

The Earth Sciences programme at NAWI Graz is offered as a joint programme of Graz University of Technology and the Karl-Franzens University. For students this means that they can profit from the outstanding achievements and the competences of two universities - an absolute novelty in Austria!

Contents

The Earth Sciences bachelor´s programme consists of one stage of study that lasts a total of six semesters and includes an introductory phase. Students, who have completed the study programme, are awarded a "BSc" (Bachelor of Science). Completion of the bachelor´s programme makes interesting combinations with other fields of study possible.

The bachelor´s programme in Earth Sciences consists of a single stage of study with an introductory phase and lasts a total of six semesters. It focuses on the following
areas of expertise:

* A well-founded knowledge and understanding of the methods of geochemistry, applied geology and geophysics;
* A knowledge of mathematics, chemistry, physics, zoology and botany;
* Tying together of fundamental and applied earth science topics;
* Computer-supported investigations of relevant problems;
* Scientific approaches and their application;
* The ability to apply acquired knowledge universally and at an interdisciplinary level;
* Ability to work in a team, and oral and written communicative competence.

And since the academic degree is internationally recognized, there is no problem in continuing with the programme in any other country. However, the "BSc" is only the first academic degree, and by itself, it does not provide students with sufficient professional qualification.

The Earth Sciences bachelor´s programme is the basis of the subsequent four-semester master's programme with specializations in "Engineering Geology", "Hydrogeology and Hydrogeochemistry", "Geology - Petrology" as well as "Geobiology and Paleoecology".

Requirements

1. The general university entrance qualification:

a. Austrian secondary school leaving certificate

b. University entrance qualification certificate

c. a foreign certificate that is nostrified in Austria or a secondary school leaving certificate that is accepted as being equivalent based upon the rector´s decision

d. a certificate that proves you have completed at least a three-year course of study at an accredited Austrian or foreign post-secondary educational institution (e.g. university of applied sciences study programmes)

2. The special university entrance qualification

This concerns supplementary examinations to those secondary school leaving certificates issued in Austria, (e.g. "descriptive geometry" supplementary examination). Those who have foreign secondary school leaving certificates have to prove that they have the right to a study place in the same study programme in the country which issued the secondary school leaving examination.

3. German proficiency

Persons, whose first language is not German, have to prove German proficiency. If you cannot present proof of this, then you have to take a supplementary examination, which has to be completed before admission to a degree study programme.
