What do a Goretex jacket, biodiesel and a 10-Euro bill have in common? Correct, chemical and process engineering have something to say about all three. And this is true for almost all areas of daily life, from food to plastics, from hygiene articles to computer chips. In short: In short, no modern products without chemical and process engineering.

Put simply, chemical and process engineering is the science that deals with the transformation of materials by means of mechanical, thermal or chemical processes. And as it can be seen from the definition, a lot of other sciences play a role in this: Chemistry, mathematics, and mechanical engineering, just to name a few. Thus, interdisciplinarity is written in capital letters. And the beautiful thing about it: Students get to try all of this out practically at an early stage of their studies since a lot of the courses take their students right to the companies. This is made possible due to the traditionally good co-operation with industry. By the way, the friendly atmosphere in the well-equipped institutes is also a tradition!

Chemical and process engineers are all-rounders. Since almost all industrial branches need chemical and process engineering, there is a wide range of professional possibilities.

The know-how and competence of chemical and process engineers are sought after wherever industrial plants are erected and operated. The spectrum ranges from the food, tobacco and alcohol industry, paper industry, plastics industry, petrochemistry and the production of chemicals to biotechnology, among others. In addition, chemical and process engineering includes a component that is very strongly oriented towards the environment. Thus, chemical and process engineers are often employed by companies and authorities as experts for environmental issues.

Contents

The programme in Chemical and Process Engineering is divided into a bachelor´s programme in "Chemical and Process Engineering" that lasts six semesters and a four-semester master´s programme. Students, who have completed the bachelor´s programme, are awarded a "BSc" (Bachelor of Science).

In chemical and process engineering, a BSc already opens up interesting professional possibilities. For example, the combination of a school leaving exam from a higher-level industrial college and a BSc are a good basis to start one´s working life right away. All those who want to learn more and continue their studies can choose from a number of interesting combinations with other fields of study.

A six-semester bachelor´s programme in Chemical and Process Engineering and a four-semester master´s programme with the opportunity to specialise in Paper and
Pulp Technology, and Chemical and Process Engineering are offered in chemical engineering.

In the Chemical and Process Engineering bachelor´s programme, the following expertise is learned:

* The most important theories, principles and methods of process development, from the design of plants to sensitivity studies and tracing of processes of existing plants;
* The principles of basic operations (e.g. conversion,separation and mixing of substances) for the production of various materials;
* An understanding of the interdisciplinary context while working independently, and the necessity of bringing together different specialised fields;
* The ability to apply analogies between the exchange effects of impulses, heat and materials in order to solve problems of the transportation of materials computationally;
* The ability to develop strategies contributing to solving problems in process engineering (using computer programmes);
* The ability to estimate the limits of the various methods and models available, and, furthermore, to make an appropriate choice in the framework of computersupported design of chemical plants and basic operations of process engineering.

And since the academic degree is internationally recognized, there is no problem in continuing with the programme in any other country. The bachelor´s programme in Chemical and Process Engineering is the basis for the subsequent four-semester master's programme. Students consolidate and expand the knowledge they have already acquired by specializing in Paper and Pulp Technology as well as Chemical and Process Engineering.

Requirements

1. The general university entrance qualification:

a. Austrian secondary school leaving certificate

b. University entrance qualification certificate

c. a foreign certificate that is nostrified in Austria or a secondary school leaving certificate that is accepted as being equivalent based upon the rector´s decision

d. a certificate that proves you have completed at least a three-year course of study at an accredited Austrian or foreign post-secondary educational institution (e.g. university of applied sciences study programmes)

2. The special university entrance qualification

This concerns supplementary examinations to those secondary school leaving certificates issued in Austria, (e.g. "descriptive geometry" supplementary examination). Those who have foreign secondary school leaving certificates have to prove that they have the right to a study place in the same study programme in the country which issued the secondary school leaving examination.

3. German proficiency

Persons, whose first language is not German, have to prove German proficiency. If you cannot present proof of this, then you have to take a supplementary examination, which has to be completed before admission to a degree study programme.
