At the Babes-Bolyai University of Cluj, American studies have developed as a unique field of academic teaching and research in Romania after 1990. They continue the inter-war tradition inaugurated by sociologist Virgil Barbat and through the establishment of department and a major in American studies (2004) the focus has been laid on American modernity and the consequences of modernization and democratization in American society. The analysis of critical discourse, the defining and redefining of the cultural canon, the critique of the concept of power, the issue of identity within globalization and consumerism, the metamorphoses of the traditional liberalism and republicanism are the guidelines of the section.
The core courses of the programme are the following: Introduction to North-American Studies, History of the American Political Ideas, American Sociological Paradigms, Introduction to the American Judicial System, History of the USA, Urban Structures in the USA, American Institutional Management, Liberal Economic Practice, American Constitution, American Political System, Material Culture in the USA, Civil Rights Movement in the USA, Introduction to the Afro-American Culture, Philosophy of American Pragmatism, Representations of the American Folk Culture, The American Perspective in the International and Transatlantic Relations, The American Intellectual History, American Film, Interethnic Relations in the USA, American Art.
In addition to these courses, students are expected to choose one or two elective courses per semester as well as study two languages: English and either German, French, Italian or Spanish.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

A precondition for application is the recognition of the study certificates (high school, BA) by the Romanian Ministry of Education, Research and Innovation. Our office can assist EU citizens in gettingthis recognition, by collecting and sending their files further to the Ministry of Education, Research and Innovation. The application file must comprise the following documents:
* Certified copy of the following documents translated into Romanian/English/ French or German, in case the originals are not written in one of the languages mentioned above:
a) High-school graduation diploma
b) Transcript of Records for high-school studies
c) Birth certificate
d) Marriage certificate (if the applicant's last name changed subsequent to marriage)
* Medical certificate
* Passport copy
* Four passport-size photographs
* Application form
A compulsory entry requirement for each applicant is an English language certificate, which must be attached to the application form. The applicant not having such a certificate may achieve one after the application process, but not later than October 1, 2010.
Entry requirements:
* Baccalaureate grade - meaning 20% of the admittance score;
* High school graduation mark - meaning 40% of the admittance score;
* Year grade for the following high school courses: History, Philosophy, Economics (if some courses were studied for more than one year, the applicant must pick the grade of a single year)
or
The grade of an optional course from the area of the European Studies (History of Europe, European Idea, Philosophy of the European Unification, History of the European Economy, European Political Structures, Communitarian Diplomacy, Knowledge about the European Union, Human Rights, Basics of European Union Law, The Economics of Transition, Economic and Regional Geography, European Integration, History of International Relations, Theories of European Integration, European Literature and Civilization, etc.), as the applicants wishes, also 40% of the admittance score.
Non-EU citizens:
Foreign applicants who want to enroll at Universitatea Babes-Bolyai as self
sponsored students have two choices:
1. Submit their documents to the Department of European Affairs and
International Relations within the Ministry of Education, Research and
Innovation (28-30, Gen. Berthelot Street, 010168 Bucharest, Romania, Phone
no: +40 21 405 62 00) until August 31st , 2009.
2. Submit their documents directly to Universitatea Babes-Bolyai, Centre for
International Cooperation (68 Avram Iancu St., 400083 Cluj-Napoca, Phone no:
+40 264 429 762 ext 6023).
The deadline for applications at Universitatea Babes-Bolyai is August 10th, 2009.
