Programme Description

Chemistry students are prepared to develop a wide range of abilities that cover three major categories:

- acquiring specialty theoretical knowledge by learning, understanding and applying concepts described during courses and seminaries;

- obtaining abilities specific to laboratory activities by directly experimenting during practical courses;

- developing general abilities in chemistry context applicable in other domains also, that would offer graduates best chances on the work market and carrier flexibility as well.

The graduates of this line of study may work in: product quality control laboratories (in chemical and petrochemical industry, food industry, pharmaceutical industry, cosmetics industry, wood and furniture industry, and textile industry), environment laboratories, clinical laboratories, public services, consulting for firms that trade materials and equipments specific for chemistry laboratories, in research laboratories.

Contents

Students in the Bachelor of Chemistry programme take the following compulsory courses: General Mathematics, General Chemistry, General Physics, Use of Computers, Basics of Inorganic Chemsitry, Non-Metal Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Basics of Organic Chemistry, Analytical Qualitative Chemistry, Kinetics and Electrochemistry, Organic Chemistry, Analytical Quantitative Chemistry and Separation Methods, Metal Chemistry, Coordinative and Organometallic Chemistry, Colloidal and Interface Chemistry, Organometallic Compounds in Organic Synthesis, Instrumental Analysis, Chemical Technology, Biochemistry, Reaction Mechanisms and Stereochemistry, Bioinorganic Chemistry, Argumentation Theory, Macromolecular Physical Chemistry, Analytical Control in Product´s Quality.

Students are also obliged to take several practical courses, as well as 3 semesters of a foreign language. The last semester is also devoted to writing the bachelor thesis.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

EU CITIZENS

EU citizens follow the same admission procedures as Romanian citizens.

Admission for the academic year 2010/2011 at Bachelor level will take place starting with July 12th 2010 until July 23rd 2010. A second session will be organized by the Faculty in the period 6-10 September 2010.

Admission at Bachelor level consists mainly of a file contest.

A precondition for application is the recognition of the study certificates (high school, BA) by the Romanian Ministry of Education, Research and Innovation. Our office can assist EU citizens in gettingthis recognition, by collecting and sending their files further to the Ministry of Education, Research and Innovation. The application file must comprise the following documents:

* Certified copy of the following documents translated into Romanian/English/ French or German, in case the originals are not written in one of the languages mentioned above:

a) High-school graduation diploma

b) Transcript of Records for high-school studies

c) Birth certificate

d) Marriage certificate (if the applicant's last name changed subsequent to marriage)

* Medical certificate
* Passport copy
* Four passport-size photographs
* Application form (see below)

After the recognition of the foreign degrees is issued by the Romanian Ministry of Education, the candidate follows the same calendar and admission conditions as Romanian citizens (including subscription at the Faculty, documents, and possible exams or file contests). For details, please contact the Centre for International Cooperation or the respective Faculties.

After the admission exam, the candidate can confirm their position by submitting the original study certificates and other required documents at the Faculty. The examination of English language skills for foreign students will take place according to the Methodology approved by the Institute of Romanian Language (www.ilr.ro). The centres for testing and the periods for taking the language exams will be established subsequently (Exception from taking the test: citizens from a country whose official language is English).

NON-EU CITIZENS

Foreign applicants who want to enroll at Babes-Bolyai University as self sponsored students have two choices:

1. Submit their documents to the Department of European Affairs and International Relations within the Ministry of Education, Research and Innovation (28-30, Gen. Berthelot Street, 010168 Bucharest, Romania, Phone no: +40 21 405 62 00) until July 15th 2010.

2. Submit their documents directly to Babes-Bolyai University, Centre for International Cooperation (68 Avram Iancu St., 400083 Cluj-Napoca, Phone no: +40 264 429 762 ext 6023). The deadline for applications at Universitatea Babes-Bolyai is July 15th 2010.

Documents Required for Application:

b) Transcript of Records for high-school studies

Foreign citizens can enroll at Universitatea Babes-Bolyai based on the letter of acceptance delivered by the Ministry of Education, Research and Innovation without having to pass an admission exam. The examination of English language skills for foreign students will take place according to the Methodology approved by the Institute of Romanian Language (www.ilr.ro). The centres for testing and the periods for taking the language exams will be established subsequently (Exception from taking the test: citizens from a country whose official language is English).

Citizens from Algeria, India, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria and Pakistanwill submit their application files exclusively through the Romanian diplomatic missions in the respective countries (embassies, consulates).
