This innovative programme leads to an honours degree in Spatial Planning or Environmental Management. It concerns integrating the benefits of natural and social sciences with purely scientific information in order to achieve the sustainable development of a society. It is also about learning to interpret scientific, technical and design data and applying it to formulate policies and programmes which take into consideration issues such as resource management, environmental impact concerns, waste management, health and safety. Students take all subjects in Year 1 and in Year 2 choose options from the Spatial Planning or the Environmental Management areas and fully specialise in Year 4. Project and fieldwork are an integral part of the programme and in Year 3 there is a field trip to another EU state (Students need to make financial allowance for this).
Spatial Planning graduates will be equipped to contribute to the preparation of regional, county and urban development plans, to the preparation and evaluation of environmental impact assessments, to carrying out development control and to the formulation and implementation of community development and rural resource management programmes.
Environmental Management graduates will be equipped to formulate and implement policies and programmes for the environmentally sustainable management of organisations, to carry out environmental audits, to prepare and implement plans for waste management and resource management and to prepare and evaluate environmental impact and risk assessments.
