As an Arts student, you can choose to study how people live, how they think, how they behave, how they interact with each other socially or economically; you can analyse our cultural, literary, historical, or political development; or get to grips with a fundamental analysis of human life through the study of its physical and biological processes. Within the Faculties of Arts, Celtic Studies & Philosophy and Social Sciences, you can opt for a denominated (specialised) or non-denominated degree. The Joint Honours Arts degree offers flexibility, giving you the option to choose a diverse range of subjects. The denominated or specialised Arts degrees are aimed at students who are already sure they want to specialise in a particular area. You will have a number of weeks at the beginning of First Year to choose your Arts subjects. We encourage you to keep an open mind during this crucial period and to dip into a range of areas before making a decision.
First Year
First Year subjects are divided into eight groups. Students take three subjects, with not more than one subject taken from the same group. For example, if you choose History, you cannot study Psychology, Greek or Business. Certain other restrictions apply; please see bottom of table for details. Check that your preferred subject combinations are also available in Second/Third Year by referring to the table above.
Second and Third Year
In Second and Third Year, students continue with two of their First Year subjects. For example, if you choose Geography, Anthropology, and Sociology in First Year, you can continue any two of these subjects in Second Year and on into Third Year. Note that most, though not all, subject combinations that are available in First Year are also available in subsequent years. You may not study more than one subject from a single group in the table. Some subjects are available as Single Honours, where students generally take one subject only in Second and Third Year.
