Optometry requires detailed understanding of the functions of vision and of the human eye. This programme aims to provide an education in the sciences associated with vision and their clinical application in the assessment of visual functions. Topics in the programme range from the sciences of physics, optics, anatomy, physiology and pharmacology to specialist optometric subjects including techniques in optometric examination, contact lenses, binocular vision, and the detection of eye diseases. Clinical training is provided in the DIT Optometry Clinic.
Optometry calls for a high degree of accuracy, attention to detail and manual dexterity. Optometrists should have a high level of interest in scientific work, the ability to work with people and win confi dence.
Students may be required to undergo Garda vetting before being allowed to register.
Year One
Geometrical and Physical Optics, Visual Science, Cell Biology, Histology, Anatomy and Physiology, Ophthalmic Optics and Dispensing, Physics, Mathematics and Learning Skills and Development.
Year Two
Clinical Optometry, Optical Dispensing, Binocular Vision 1, Contact Lens Practice 1, Ocular Anatomy and Physiology, Ocular Biochemistry, Medical Physiology, Intercultural Communications for Optometrists 1, Experimental Statistics.
Year Three
Primary Care Clinic 1, Advanced Clinical Techniques, Contact Lens Practice 2, Binocular Vision 2, Ocular Disease, Ocular and General Pharmacology, Physiology of Vision, Intercultural Communications for Optometrists 2.
Year Four
Primary Care Clinic, Contact Lenses, Specialist Clinical Practice, Environmental Optometry, Paediatric Optometry, Vision Rehabilitation, Optometry and Practice Management, Topics in Modern Optometry, Project. Students will spend a summer period of four months in supervised optometric practice between third and fourth year.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
