This programme is designed to educate and train graduates as Technologists or Scientific Analysts for employment in the medicinal products and pharmaceutical sector as well as the related chemical industries. Year one and year two will provide a solid foundation in the chemical sciences and over the course of the programme a `hands-on´ approach will be developed in laboratories. There are specialised modules focused on drug design and synthesis, drug action, drug delivery and other aspects of modern medicinal chemistry. Access to well equipped instrument laboratories is a feature of the programme and students will gain experience using state-of-the-art modern spectroscopic, chromatographic and electrochemical instrumental techniques, all directly applicable to future employment in industry. Leaving Certificate Chemistry is not required for this programme.

Contents

Year One

The first year of this programme aims to establish a sound foundation in science topics including Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Maths, Information Technology and Professional Development. An Introduction to Medicinal Chemistry will be delivered in the second semester of year one, along with elective modules in Biology and Physics. Medicinal Chemistry assignments will be integrated into the assessment in Year One.

Year Two

The second year of the programme is designed to provide students with a good foundation in Analytical, Physical, Organic and Inorganic Chemistry, together with industry-focused modules in Spectroscopy, Chemical and Pharmaceutical Technology, Environmental Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Regulation. Relevant modules in Mathematics, IT, Professional Skills and Microbiology are also delivered. Group project work is a key feature of this year.

Year Three

In the final year of this programme the modules become more specialised and include Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmaceutical and Chemical Processes, Quality Assurance and Validation.
