Along with the study of at least one language and spending time at a university abroad, you will also participate in specially created European Studies modules, drawing on disciplines such as anthropology, geography, sociology and the ancient classics. You will also be encouraged to make connections across these areas for a greater understanding of what it means to be a European citizen.
As a specialised Double Honours BA in European Studies, a language and two other subjects are taken in First Year. In Second, Third and Fourth year, students take a language and one other subject. Students spend their third year studying abroad.
Note: Students must be eligible to participate in the Erasmus programme: You must be either a citizen of one of the 27 EU member states or of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Turkey; a permanent resident of a participating country in the Erasmus programme; have been awarded refugee status in a participating country; or a stateless person.
First YearChoose three subjects, one of which must be a language. You may not pick more than one subject from a group.
Group 1: Anthropology, Economics
Group 2: Geography, German
Group 3: French, Greek and Roman Civilization
Group 4: History
Group 5: Sociology, Spanish
You will also take additional European-related modules.
Second YearContinue with your chosen language and one other subject from First Year. You will also take European-related modules, including one studied at the Louvain Institute in Brussels (Erasmus funding is provided but students may need to budget for additional costs associated with study abroad.
Third YearStudy two subjects at a university in the country of your chosen language.
Fourth YearReturn to Maynooth to study your two subjects from Second and Third Year, and take European-related modules.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Applicants must have an IELTS score of 6, if not they may take our International
Foundation Course. Minimum English language requirement for the IFC is IELTS 4.5 or equivalent.
