The study of English literature allows you to travel without leaving home, to witness historical moments that took place before you were born and to study the human condition up close, in all its pain and glory. Great literature can give you as much of an insight into the complexities of human nature as any psychology textbook can. It can help you see complicated situations from multiple angles. It can be thought-provoking, moving, shocking and funny - often all at the same time.
English at NUI Maynooth explores the literature of Ireland today, as well as the development of English literature down through the ages, from the Renaissance to our postmodern culture. You will also gain a grounding in the history of ideas, examining the wider contexts from which literature arises - social, political and cultural.
As a student, you will acquire a remarkable degree of intellectual flexibility, an awareness of the multi-dimensional nature of situations and the ability to approach problems with an open mind. You will develop writing, research and analytical skills, learn to express yourself coherently, and have an opportunity to engage in creative writing.
As a Major/Minor BA degree, English is taken as a double subject in First Year with one other subject and with one other (minor) subject in Second and Third Year.
Students who opt to spend a year studying abroad are awarded a BA (International) degree.
