Internationally Oriented Studies (IOS) is a study program for international and German students. The IOS program offers the opportunity to receive an excellent engineering education, make international contacts, learn German and explore the possibilities of studying abroad.
In the Bachelor of Science in Applied Chemistry students actively lay the foundation for their future careers. Our Jülich campus offers modern, flexible study programs with an emphasis on teaching professional competence and a methodical approach.
Graduates demonstrate a high degree of flexibility and sense of responsibility in their studies and later careers. Students have the freedom to choose one area of their studies according to their individual aptitudes and interests. Elective courses offer students the chance to study in depth a subject of special interest from the following options:
o environmental analysis
o environmental technologies
o life scienceso analytical methods in life scienceso process engineering
A great advantage for international students is that the first two semesters of the Bachelor's program are taught in English! During this period, students attend intensive German language lessons to prepare for the German language examination DSH 1. Bilingual education plus innovative degree programs give our students the best of both worlds - an excellent command of cutting edge technology and exceptional communication skills.
Students have a solid, wide-ranging knowledge that is sought after by prospective employers. The elective modules in the fourth and fifth semeseters allow students to actively influence their career orientatoin. Current specialist areas include enviornmental chemistry in combination wiht environmental technology, food science in combinateion wiht foodstuffs and consumer protection, as well as nuclear chemistry.
The course is constructed so that students receive an in-depth, comprehensive education in all the important areas of modern chemistry. In addition to the fundamentals of inorganic, organic, physical and technical chemistry and analytical methods, biochemistry, as well as polymer and plastics technology, is also taught; furthermore, it is possible to focus on particular topics during elective courses. In this context, the acquisition and practice of manual skills in our modern, well-equipped laboratories plays a major role, in order to ensure students are later able to apply the knowledge they have gained at university to their daily work in their chosen career. Above all, a practical approach is always at the fore, to ensure students are equipped for careers in a wide spectrum of industry, and are able to provide solutions to many different kinds of problems.
In the latter part of the course, students are given the opportunity to take part in group practical work in laboratories and to apply themselves to project-based work as preparation for the demands of their future careers. This involves students planning their project together, working towards a common goal, joining forces to achieve their aims, and putting together a written report which is then presented to the group.
It is also possible to develop these skills further, through more advanced qualifications which are offered each semester by lectures on "Additional Key Qualifications." Included here is the teaching of many varied skills, such as rhetoric, languages, communication skills, group work, the acquisition of leadership qualities, right up to a knowledge of journalism, art and music. The students themselves are allowed to decide in which areas they would like to qualify. Moreover, if they have enjoyed their degree course and hvae been successful in their studies, they can apply for the Master's degree in "Applied Polymer Science" involving managerial assignments form industry or other institutions, an area suffering from a chronic lack of graduates. Students may alternatively decide to join the English-language European Master of Science in Nuclear Applications program. For those students who in the course of their studies have the desire to learn more about scientific aspects of the subject, we offer a joint doctorate together with the RWTH Aachen, an opportunity which up to now has been successfully taken up by several of our students.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take test1. Admission requirements by country: Either German Abitur or Fachhochschulreife or equivalent international qualification (see our website or or successful completion of the Freshman Program at the FH Aachen. If you do not meet the admission requirements to the IOS program, you might be interested in our Freshman program, which prepares students for the IOS Bachelor´s program. Information about the Freshman program is available at
