Internationally Oriented Studies (IOS) is a study program for international and German students. The IOS program offers the opportunity to receive an excellent engineering education, make international contacts, learn German and explore the possibilities of studying abroad.

The area of energy and environmental technology holds great perspectives for young, dynamic engineers, both men and women. Climate change is a much-discussed topic at present, and will remain so in years to come.

Perhaps mighty hurricanes will hit our shores over the next few decades; costal regions may be flooded or drought periods will occur to influence living conditions all over the globe.

Parallel to this, energy prices may climb to unknown heights and reserves of fossil fuels such as crude oil or natural gas run out.

Energy conversion technology, energy efficiency and research into renewable energies will become one of the main topics over the next few decades. Utilization of nuclear energy may also be of major concern in the future. All of these, from the improvement of the efficiency of existing plants, vehicles, HVAC systems, through to the implementation of new energy technologies such as fuel cells, solar power plants, the production and use of biofuels, or hydrogen technology are challenges which are creating many new jobs for young, ambitious engineers.

A great advantage for international students is that the first two semesters of the Bachelor's program are taught in English! During this period, students attend intensive German language lessons to prepare for the German language examination DSH 1. Bilingual education plus innovative degree programs give our students the best of both worlds - an excellent command of cutting edge technology and exceptional communication skills.

The efficient use of energy, the development of new energy sources, the influence of energy conversion on changes in the environment, and new energy transfer technologies are daily under discussion; such issues will be instrumental in determining our future. Due to the looming threat of energy shortages and the increasing climate changes (carbon dioxide emissions), interesting areas of employment have arisen for young engineers, for example, in the modernisation of power stations in Germany and abroad. In Germany alone, a budget of around 20 billion euros will be invested in new power plants over the next few years. This means that a large number of new engineering positions will become available in this area. The type of knowledge and training required to take advantage of this corresponds to a large extent with the course profile offered here.

The renewable energy sector has over several years enjoyed a growth rate in double figures. Included here are solar technology, wind and biomass energy. Career opportunities in this area are set to multiply over the next few years. Research in the area of combustible fuel cells is becoming ever more practically-oriented, opening up a wide area of possible employment to engineers. Energy-saving technology will be introduced in all areas of industry, and engineers specialising in energy and the environment will be in demand. All large industrial plants, especially power plants, will have to be planned and authorised. The authorisation processes are complicated and need appropriately qualified engineers to undertake this work. In all branches of industry, changes in the use of energy will take place and compliance with environmental regulations will be required. Similarly, in this area, energy and environmental engineers will find favour.

The construction of plants which produce electricity as well as heat (combined heat and power generation) is an area where German technology leads the world. This is also a typical area of employment for engineers educated in our programs. Mention here should also be made of the engineers who work to secure our daily energy supply. Because of the strong tendency towards obsolescence in this field, many new positions are regularly created, giving young engineers ideal employment opportunities.

German technology is in great demand all over the world, which means that many young engineers are employed in the export sector, whether in planning, construction, maintenance and service, or in consultancy. Career opportunities here are good, in some cases excellent. Young engineers trained in the areas of Mechanical Engineering and Energy and the Environment can expect to enjoy a wide choice of career opportunities in their field once qualified. The areas of possible occupation are extremely varied, and offer career advancement for engineers of differing aptitudes.

The Rhineland is greatly influenced by the energy market; however, students with language skills often find that a spell working abroad also brings dividends in terms of career advancement. As lectures in the first two semesters are given in English, students find themselves in an advantageous position to develop a career abroad. Graduates from an international degree course are especially attractive for prospective employers.

The quality and excellence of our degree program is evident in the fact that our specialist training in Energy Studies, offered in collaboration with the PowerTech Training Centre in Essen, has such a reputable status that power plants of the region send some of their future engineers to be trained and educated. Following an intensive foundation course, where you will acquire the specialist knowledge of Mechanical Engineering, our study program allows you to choose from one of the following specialist study areas, each with its own skill profile. Moreover, a seminar on the technical and scientific development of energy and environmental technology is held. All lecturers are either from industry or renowned scientific institutions.

All lectures are given in English during the first two semesters. In this way, students develop proficiency in this, the most important language in the world, which will prove a great advantage for students choosing a career abroad.

Area of Specialisation: Energy Technology

In choosing this specialist area, you will be preparing for a career in the energy technology branch. You will gain an insight into the world of energy economics worldwide, and will learn to evaluate the influence of energy prices on the energy economy. Knowledge of the way the environment is affected by energy conversion, energy networks and energy transport, along with possible methods to increase energy efficiency, will assist you with the planning and decision-making process associated with future energy supplies. Knowledge of the combustion processes of fossil fuels, heat transfer, treatment of waste gases (dust, SO2, NOx, and CO2), combined heat and power generation and power plant engineering are further examples of relevant topics taught. Renewable energy is another main focus, especially solar energy, water and wind power, along with the use of biomass energy. During the Energy and the Environment seminar, current issues such as these are approached in a scientific manner.

Area of Specialisation: Environmental Technology

In this specialist area, the effects on the environment of energy conversion are studied. Subjects taught include industrial energy technology with fossil fuels, treatment of waste gases (dust, SO2, NOx, and CO2), combined heat and power generation and power plant engineering. The topic of environmental pollution due to energy conversion is dealt with in detail, along with possible alternatives to improve the situation. Other important topics include processes which optimise the protection of the environment, the measurement of processing different energy parameters, and environmental technology, as well as an insight into environmental management and environmental law. In the Energy and the Environment seminar, current issues such as these are approached in a scientific manner.

Area of Specialisation: Nuclear Technologies

Choosing this specialist area prepares you for a career in the nuclear industry, i.e. the commissioning, planning and authorisation of nuclear power plants and other plants using nuclear power, including their dismantling. In Nuclear and Radiation Physics, lectures on the workings and application of equipment based on nuclear technology in the area of medical engineering are also given. The list of subjects covered here ncludes areas such as nuclear and radiation physics, reactor physics and reactor engineering. In-depth lectures on heat transfer and an introduction to environmental law rounds off the program. In the Energy and the Environment seminar, current issues are approached in a scientific manner.

Area of Specialisation: Power Plant Engineering *

Following an intensive foundation course, where you will acquire the specialist knowledge of Mechanical Engineering, our study program allows you to choose from one of the following specialist study areas, each with its own skill profile.
