Our BA Economics provides a solid foundation of relevant theory and quantitative techniques, as well as the key skills that are sought by employers. Modules are taught by staff active in their field of research; teaching is informed therefore by the latest developments in the subject, enabling us to provide a challenging and stimulating educational environment. These degrees enable you to gain an understanding of the fundamental principles.
In year one, in addition to the core modules - elements of economics, economic methods, the world economy - you choose three further modules from a selection that includes, for example, business accounting and finance, environmental economics and management.
In year two, you study three compulsory modules investigating macroeconomics, microeconomics and economic data analysis, and choose three modules from a selection including, for example, business competition, corporate finance, economics of social policy, European economics, and intermediate methods for economics and finance.
In year three, you study four modules chosen from a selection that includes applied econometrics, development economics, history of economic thought, industrial organisation, labour economics, international economics, monetary economics, environmental economics and policy, public economics, advanced micro and macro economics, security investment analysis, financial theory and corporate policy, and produce a dissertation (double module).
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take test* You will need at least a grade B in AS Level Mathematics if you are not doing A- Level Maths.
* You will normally be required to have A* grades in GCSE Mathematics and English Language, though some flexibility will be exercised in implementing this condition.
* We do not accept A-Level General Studies.
* Applicants are encouraged to avoid studying both Economics and Business Studies A-Levels because of the significantly overlapping curricula.
International students whose first language is not English will need an IELTS overall score of 6.5 (with no component below 6.0), TOEFL score of 573 (TWE of 4.5) or TOEFL CBT score of 230 (essay rating 4.5) or TOEFL IBT 89 (22 writing score) to be considered for most programmes.
