Our Accounting and Finance degree will help you become familiar with essential and advanced concepts of business, finance, economics, accounting, marketing and management. The degrees offer ideal preparation for employment in all areas of graduate work, and especially in the areas of business, finance, accounting and management. The degree provides a solid foundation of relevant theory and quantitative techniques, as well as the key skills that are sought by employers. The wide choice of modules on offer allows you to build a degree programme tailored to your chosen career. Modules are taught by staff active in their field of research; teaching is informed therefore by the latest developments in the subject, enabling us to provide a challenging and stimulating educational environment. Our degrees provide high quality and progressive study routes that enable you to gain an understanding of the fundamental principles.


Contents

This degree gives you the opportunity to study finance and accounting in more depth including accounting information, the legal, regulatory and social context within which accounting operates, and the design and operation of information systems. Subject to appropriate module choice, exemption from some of the ACA, ACCA and CIMA examinations is currently available on completion of the degree. In year one, you will study compulsory modules that introduce economics, finance, financial accounting, management accounting, quantitative methods and management.In year two, you study four core modules that investigate auditing and accounting information systems, corporate financial reporting and taxation, corporate finance and management accounting. You also choose two modules from a selection covering, for example, macro and micro economics, financial econometrics, financial markets and risk management, and the principles of business law.In year three, you study one core module exploring financial theory and corporate policy, and choose further modules from a large selection covering, for example, subjects such as financial planning and control, corporate governance, security investment analysis, empirical finance, international and multinational finance, financial engineering, contemporary issues in financial accounting, behaviour finance, corporate responsibility, and strategy and international business.You also have the opportunity to extend your course to four years by taking year three as an industrial placement or an international exchange.

* GCE and VCE Awards: you will normally have obtained at least ABB at A-level or its equivalent in other qualifications (not including General Studies). The typical offer is ABB. Our offers are designed to encourage applicants to achieve their academic potential. We accept two AS-levels as equivalent to an A-level
* We do not make offers based on tariff scores, however as a guide, students who were successfully admitted on to programmes in 2007 achieved an average UCAS tariff score of around 340
* There are no subject-specific requirements at A-level, but we do not accept General Studies
* All applicants are considered on their merits and offers are made in the context of each individual's own circumstances. Applicants offering a combination of A-levels, AS-levels and vocational A-levels will be made individually tailored offers as appropriate
* GCSE: if you have not studied mathematics beyond GCSE (or its equivalent) we require you to have achieved at least a grade B at GCSE. Additionally, you must be prepared to develop your mathematical skills and knowledge
* International Baccalaureate: we welcome applications from International Baccalaureate students. Our typical minimum offer is 34 points (Maths SL5 or HL4).
* Scottish Highers: we welcome applications from students with Scottish qualifications and typically look for a minimum of AABBB or ABB from Advanced Highers.
* Other qualifications: we welcome students with other qualifications.
* If English is not your native language, you will need at least IELTS 6.5, with no element below 6.0 (or equivalent in other recognised language qualifications).
