Literature is one of the primary creative acts of humankind, and the study of literature not only exercises our skills of interpretation and critical thinking, but also gives us access to the history and ideas that have shaped our world.
Study with UNYP´s talented, international instructors in Prague, a country whose literary history spans languages, genres, and centuries, and whose literary heritage includes such notables as Karel Capek, Franz Kafka, Milan Kundera, and Bohumil Hrabal.
Primary aims of the program in English Language & Literature
The English Language and Literature bachelor´s degree program at UNYP aims to
* introduce students to the history of literature in English and the discipline of literary criticism and interpretation;
* develop critical thinking and interpretive skills, research skills, and the information literacy needed to enable successful graduates to find work in a broad range of fields, or to pursue further study at the postgraduate level;
* develop, to a high degree, students´ abilities to interpret written communication, to create analytical and interpretive arguments, and to express themselves in complex, polished English prose.
The major consists of three main study areas:
* Literature, Literary History, and Literary Criticism
* Language and Culture
* Applied, Professional, and Research Writing
The program´s interdisciplinary focus fosters the development of broadly educated individuals who are able to apply their knowledge and skills creatively and flexibly in a broad range of situations and prepares them for a wide range of careers, or for further study at the postgraduate level. Appropriately for the study of literature in Prague, the program includes a significant emphasis comparative world literatures; literature in English from outside the major centers of literary production; and non-canonical literature.

Graduates who enter the job market with a bachelor´s degree in English Language and Literature may find employment in a wide range of professions, often those emphasizing research skills; analytic and interpretive skills; production of written materials; and communication, whether oral or written.
This four year American degree program leads to an American degree awarded by Empire State College in New York. Empire State College is accredited in the U.S. by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Higher Education The degree is identical to the degree that students in America receive on their graduation.
Basic Structure of the Program
1. The First Two Years - up to 60 semester credits
For the first two years, students are enrolled as UNYP students. They take primarily introductory courses in their chosen major, and General Education courses (see below).
2. Becoming an ESC - up to 128 semester credits
After successfully completing 60 credits (about two years of study) with a grade of C- or higher, and with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.00 or higher, students apply to become crossenrolled as Empire State College students. (Students also have to have a minimum TOELF score of at least 197, or have completed the English Composition I & II sequence at UNYP.)
State University of New York, Empire State College students must earn a minimum of 128 credits to obtain a bachelor´s degree. Of the 128 credits, 32 credits must be in ESC courses as part of an approved degree program.
In order to ensure that students are fulfilling their degree requirements, all students meet with a Faculty Mentor or the Empire State Academic Coordinator by the end of their first semester as Empire State College students to plan their program of study (courses) for the degree.
Empire State College maintains an office at the University of New York in Prague. The office is staffed by a fulltime Academic Coordinator and an Academic Program Assistant. The staff are available to answer questions, assist you in degree planning, provide you academic advising, ensure that your records are
accurate and complete, and offer you support and encouragement to do your best academic work.

Complementary courses
In consultation with their academic advisor, students may choose courses to focus on a certain literary genre, period, or theme; or may focus on a particular area of applied skills such as News Writing, Public Relations, teaching English, or translation.
Elective courses
Each semester, students select elective courses in consultation with an academic advisor, choosing from the wide range of courses, including Honors courses and courses in UNYP´s other majors (Business, Communication and Mass Media, International Economic Relations, and Psychology).
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testThe requirements listed here are the minimum requirements for students to be considered for admittance onto one of our programs. Students will also have to successfully pass an interview with an academic advisor, and prove themselves to be suitable for admittance. Following the American philosophy on education, UNYP will give suitable candidates the opportunity of higher education. However, students who are admitted will be required to maintain a high grade point average to remain on the course.

UNYP is officially recognized by the Czech Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports as a private higher education institution.
