The aim of the Psychology Bachelor's Degree program is to provide students with a solid foundation in science as well as practical experience in all the major fields of psychology. Psychology is a very wide field of disciplines, and the program must prepare students for the variety of potential career paths available. This degree is awarded by Empire State College, State University of New York. Student's who would like to earn a dual degree can also sit state exams at the end of their studies and receive a second diploma from UNYP accredited by the Czech Ministry of Education.
The University of New York in Prague (UNYP) is recognised as both a Czech and an American university. The four year American educational model requires students to take introductory courses in many fields during their first two years. This gives students a basic understanding of
many subjects, before they start concentrating on their major areas of study.
Another advantage of the American model is the classroom approach. Classroom discussions and assignments are designed specifically to develop the students’ critical thinking skills, which are essential for effective decision making and leadership.
Other advantages include a focus on group work and class presentations. Group work teaches students how to handle varying group dynamics which is an important corporate concept. Presentations develop students` confidence and public speaking skills which are essential in effective leadership.
The structure of the program prepares students for global employment. Proficiency in conducting business in English and familiarity with the cultural aspects of working in an international environment are stressed. This is essential for students interested in career opportunities with either multi-national corporations or domestic companies with extensive international business activities.
Our approach places a great deal of emphasis on global aspects of commerce, which is
particularly critical in today`s business environment. With our multi-national faculty and
student body, UNYP is in a particularly strong position to provide this valuable international
perspective.
Graduates have a wide range of options as to where they pursue their careers. Some
graduates have gone on to study at universities such as Oxford or LSE in England, and
Stanford or Columbia in America. Others are working for international companies such as
General Motors, Coca-Cola, The European Parliament and KPMG. The program also
serves as a strong grounding for those who wish to pursue careers in the public sector, civil
society or academia.
The Psychology Major involves a broad overview of a wide range of psychological topics. The foundation includes courses from the most important branches within the discipline, and gives students a thorough knowledge and background in the issues and theories of modern psychological thought. The focus on scientific and biological components gives students experience in critical thinking, analysis and integration of scientific theory and practice.
The specialized courses provide deeper insight into current issues of great concern to our modern society. Students become familiar with not just therapy and the treatment of mental illness, but also intercultural issues and family dynamics, as well as the application of psychological principles to the business environment. To better prepare students for their future, we offer two 'tracks' in psychology where students can specialize.
A Graduate School Track prepares students for advanced study in Clinical Psychology as well as research oriented programs in Cognition, Neuropsychology, Health and other important areas. Our Industrial/Work track allows students to gain more practical knowledge of applied psychology while also gaining a solid understanding of business through integration of relevant business classes.
