The course aims to:
provide a broad and interesting musical training within a lively musical environment that stresses the role of performance;
develop skills through a study of music in its historical context, through performance, analysis and composition;
encourage curiosity and enthusiasm about a wide range of music;
encourage critical awareness and stimulate a creative imagination;
instil the attitudes and ethos of a subject that maintains a high profile of research and scholarship;
encourage the use of technology as applicable to the study of music as a creative art;
prepare students for a career, either inside or outside music, that involves critical judgement, developed powers of communication and interactive skills.
MusB(Hons)
This is a well-established and highly regarded three-year full-time degree programme. It offers scholarly and practical education in a diverse range of musicianship skills designed to prepare you for many avenues, including performance, composition, musicology including ethnomusicology, music journalism, postgraduate study, and many non-music fields in which good critical judgement and teamwork play a vital role. Regular updates in the course content reflect the latest research conducted by our staff, for example studies in Josquin, Purcell, Beethoven, Shostakovich, Corsican polyphony, postmodern, electroacoustic and film music, analysis and all forms of concert hall composition.
MusB(Hons) and Graduate Diploma RNCM Joint Course
We also offer the MusB(Hons) and Graduate Diploma RNCM Joint Course which is a four-year double degree programme. The first three years follow both undergraduate programmes, with your final year spent solely at the Royal Northern College of Music
which is located just 300 yards from the Music department. Performance tuition, coaching, chamber ensembles and most orchestral playing are provided by the RNCM throughout the four years.
Entrance to the Joint Course is highly competitive, requiring applications with a deadline of 1st October, for entrance the following academic year. Applications via CUKAS to the RNCM (see How to Apply).

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

A Levels: AAB, inc A in Music (Joint course with RNCM requires AAA inc Music).
IB: Minimum 35 points overall inc. 6 in Music at Higher level.
Also required is Associated Board (or equiv. examinations) grade VIII, preferably at Distinction, on an instrument or voice and Associated Board grade V standard on the piano (the latter can be self-certified).
NB: Joint course with RNCM requires 35-37 points inc. 6 in Music at Higher level.
