BSc Health Studies course will suit students who are interested in an academic understanding of how people work with a view to eventually pursuing careers in health care, but without fixing a specific career path now. The course covers a range of approaches to the person with a special focus on health, health behaviours and the social context of health. The course distinguishes between natural and social conceptions of health and illness, illustrating scientific (biomedical), social (public health, psychosocial) and comparative cultural perspectives on health, healing and health care. The development of the NHS, its cost, organisation and management are discussed, considering issues such as ethics, rationing and the consequences of an ageing society. This course is suitable preparation for careers such as personnel and management as well as being the basis for a wide variety of caring careers. It could also form the basis for future fast-track graduate conversion into caring professions such as nursing, social work, medicine or other heath professions.
