Location of University of Essex

The University of Essex is one of the UK's leading academic institutions, ranked ninth nationally for research excellence following the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE).

BA English Literature enables you to undertake a special study of literary texts. This course offers a varied, flexible and distinctive curriculum focused on the study of English literature, encompassing several genres and periods including United States literature, European literature, Shakespeare and other dramatists, and twentieth-century literature.

Alongside your core modules in early modern literature and literary theory, we offer a range of optional modules that allow you to study areas of literature that are of interest to you. In your final year, you can opt to replace one of your taught modules with an independent study, which allows you to develop your own academic interests in depth.
