You will acquire the key skills and competencies needed to start working as a professional in multicultural organisations the world over . Focusing on Europe and its relationship with the wider world, the programme provides you with advanced skills in intercultural communication, proficiency in at least 2 foreign languages and general management skills.

As part of the European Studies `Major´ you will also acquire basic expertise in the subject fields of European Policy and International Marketing. The `Minors´ European Studies offers, will enable you to further specialise and to choose to deepen in areas of Business Management or Law & Politics. You may also choose to deepen in the Communications area, pick a language based minor to deepen your knowledge, or indeed mix and match minors to get the best of all worlds!

The programme will introduce you to Europe and the many dimensions which it comprises. You will learn through lectures, seminars, workshops and discussion groups. You will also get the chance to sample Europe by meeting fellow students from all over the world, completing a six month exchange period at one of our many partner universities and finally working in an international environment during a four month work placement either in the Netherlands or abroad.

Contents

The English language version of the programme runs for three years (there´s also a four-year programme, which is part-English, part-Dutch.) Each year is split into two semesters, and each semester is split into two terms.

The programme is divided into courses and other activities, like projects, reports and group assignments. For each part of the programme that you complete, you´ll be marked on a scale of 1(the lowest mark) to 10 (the highest mark). If your mark is 6 or higher, you get credits.

Throughout the course, you´ll work on both group projects, and individual assignments. You´ll work on projects that simulate real life situations, like organising a conference or other events. You´ll also be asked to write reports on these projects, and to deliver presentations on them - either in English, or your second language.

You can also earn extra credits by taking part in extracurricular activities, such as working for the college paper, the student union, the college council, the PR committee etc.

By the time you graduate, you´ll have built up a portfolio of your personal development - group assignments, projects, your time abroad, and your traineeship.

Major-minor

During your first year, you´ll build up a broad knowledge of different areas that affect international business - politics, economics, culture and communication.

After that, you´ll have the chance to deepen your knowledge, in the Private sector (Business Management) or the Public sector ( Public Administration)

Private sector

The Private sector combines subjects like strategic management, marketing and export in practice. You´ll learn about export management and international marketing practice. Course overview: export management, export in practice, export policy plans, management accounting, international marketing, and strategic management.

Public sector

Want to know how governments and civil services operate? Public administration explores subjects like European Law and the structure of the European Union in greater depth. Course overview: contemporary political issues, international organisations, European public policy, European regional policy, human rights, public international law, media and politics.

Choosing a minor

You can enhance your degree by taking on extra `minor´ subjects. Taking the right minor can help lay the foundations for further studies. At The Hague University, you can get your Master´s degree in just 12 months, full-time - or 15 months, part-time.

Research placements

Throughout your course, you´ll be looking at real scenarios, involving real companies. As part of the programme, you´ll have to do research, write reports and make presentations for a company either here in The Netherlands - or even better, a company that´s based overseas.

During your internship, you´ll apply the knowledge and skills you´ve read and discussed on the course to a five-month internship, with an internationally-focused company. Thanks to a very broad network of companies, we´re able to offer our students a wide range of interesting positions.

How about spending time at Amnesty International in Australia or Palm Pictures in New York? We´ve sent students all over the globe - from Argentina to the United States, from Hungary to Japan.

Exchange programmes

Studying abroad is part of the experience. In the second year of your course, you´ll spend about five months studying at a foreign college or university. We´ve got partnerships with institutions all over the world - across Europe, Canada, the US, Mexico, Chile, Thailand, Japan, South Korea, Turkey, Morocco, South Africa and Australia.

Where you end up will depend on where you´d like to go, your language skills, your specialisation, and the level of demand for your chosen country.

If you´ve come to The Hague University from another country, then you don´t have to take part in the exchange programme (since you´re already experiencing life in a different country and culture). But you´re still welcome to take part - and you´re encouraged to do so.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
