Trade and industry is clamouring for open innovators with a technical education and the ability to think outside the box. Both in the Netherlands and abroad. Moreover, virtually all borders have been eliminated thanks to globalization and all our modern technologies. This is why your training in Industrial Design Engineering is conducted entirely in English. The subjects that you follow focus on research, design and entrepreneurship. Each year you work on four projects commissioned by external clients. In this way, while still studying you’ll be applying your creative ideas in practice.

Candidate profile

You...

An open innovator sees a challenge in every problem. You are creative and you enjoy devising solutions that are not immediately obvious. Curiosity about technology and the world around you drive your enthusiasm. You like to know how things work, anything from a machine to a person. Your focus is international and you are ready to learn from other people of other nationalities, during your course and in professional practice. With your open attitude, you have no difficulty in seeing the technical options, of adopting the perspective of the user, the market and your client. You have just one goal in mind: ensuring that your solutions are sensible and successful.

...and us

The English-taught Industrial Design Engineering bachelor’s degree programme is just as innovative as the solutions you’ll devise as an open innovator. The programme starts on 1 September 2011 and is unique in the Netherlands. Because we believe that professional practice needs to be present in the learning environment for the sake of your future, we have involved trade and industry in both the course development and the practical details of each subject. We appreciate your input, too. As early as the first year, we will ask you whether you have any good ideas for the next stages of the programme. By the way, did you know that the technical degree programmes offered by The Hague University of Applied Sciences are among the best in the Netherlands? This means your preparation for the job market will be outstanding!

Contents

The English-taught Industrial Design Engineering degree programme at The Hague University of Applied Sciences has a three-year curriculum and leads to a Bachelor of Engineering. You’ll learn to devise creative and successful solutions for complex issues in trade and industry and non-profit organizations, solutions that are of value to the user, the market and society.

The English-taught Industrial Design Engineering degree programme lasts three years and consists solely of a main phase. In each year of the degree programme, a skill is adopted as the year’s theme; this is a skill that will be useful to you as a future open innovator.

  • Year 1 The Explorer (the researcher) Four modules, four projects
  • Year 2 The Creator (the designer) Four modules, four projects
  • Year 3 The Entrepreneur Four modules, minors, final project

Main phase 1 (first year)

In the first year you focus on an important phase in a creative design process: the research phase. In this initial phase, you seek a creative solution to an existing problem. Imagine that the manager of Schiphol learns that passenger waiting times have increased. To prevent frustration growing among the waiting travellers, she wants you to tell her what she can do about the situation. You observe and interview the travellers and translate the results into a solution. To make this creative jump, you need empathy and knowledge, knowledge of, say, group behaviour, cultural differences and opportunities for testing. You will learn about these subjects in the first year, in both theory lessons and in field assignments.

Main phase 2 (second year)

The second year focuses on actually designing the creative solutions that you devise. You will immerse yourself in subjects such as social innovation, production techniques, user-friendly and environmentally friendly materials and digital design techniques. You need this knowledge and these skills to arrive at a complete solution, one that revolves around the user. You’ll gain a great deal of practical experience in this year.

Main phase 3 (final year)

In the final year you study support subjects; these teach you smart, purposeful and strategic entrepreneurship. Once you have designed a solution, its successful marketing is naturally your next concern so that people really do benefit from it. You’ll learn where you need to focus your attention as an entrepreneur and you will also learn all about matters such as marketing strategies, business models, corporate social responsibility, change management and networking. You will also have the opportunity to study minors of your own choice and this is also the year in which you graduate.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
