Do you dream of being one of the people who actually shape public policy? Ever thought you could do a better job of dealing with global issues than governments and international organisations? If you´ve got a head for solving international problems, and feel passionate about politics, then our Bachelor of International Public Management could be for you.
The programme prepares you for a career as either a policy maker or manager in an organisation that deals with complex, international public issues - like global warming, trade, peace and security, or human rights, for example.
Can you see yourself working in government, or international organisations, running a department or managing projects? Do you have a head for shaping public policy or solving international problems ? It takes an analytical brain and self-discipline, balanced by strong social skills - engaging with people, motivating your team.
But you don´t necessarily need to work in the public sector. There are lots of businesses who need exactly the same knowledge and skills. Multinationals like KLM and Shell are also affected by public policy, and they need people need people with specialist knowledge, as well as solid management skills.
The Bachelor of International Public Management is a four year, full-time programme. It´s a very practical, hands-on programme, where you´ll learn by doing.
In the first two years, you´ll learn the fundamentals, developing the skills and knowledge you´ll actually need in your career. But you´ll spend quite a lot of your time actually working on team projects, solving problems drawn from real life scenarios.
In the final two years of your programme, you´ll have to apply everything you´ve learned and practiced on a work placement, or job, for a real organisation. So you´ll graduate with two years of experience already behind you. You choose your minors, your work placement and your thesis subject, so you can customize your final two years to your own ambitions and career goals.
Content
The first two years of the programme are when most of the classroom-based learning takes place. You’ll explore subjects and themes like:
You’ll learn through a mix of lectures, group debates and discussions, team projects and individual assignments.
In the final two years, you’ll have more of a say over what you study. While you work for a real organisation on a work placement, you can specialise in a field that interests you – either one of the offered minors (European Public Management, European Public Management, Globalization and its new divides, Globalisation, Governance and Governments, International Law) or a different field altogether.
You’re in control of your own career.
Major-minor
In the last two years of the programme, you have the chance to specialise, by taking on a `minor´. Taking the right minor can help lay the foundations for further studies. The examples of minors offered by the Academy of Public Management, Safety and Law include:
If you choose any of these minors, you could choose to go straight on to do Master´s degree either here at The Hague, at Leiden University - or one of our partner institutions.
But you can choose a minor from another field, too. It´s up to you to shape your studies in a way that suits your future career.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
More informationPlease see: http://portal.hhs.nl/portal/page/portal/nl/bachelorstudies/aanbodopleidingen/public-management/even-voorstellen(in Dutch) for the specific entrance requirements.
We´ll need to assess your secondary school certificate, before we decide on your eligibility. To make sure your certificate is judged fairly, we work together with NUFFIC, an organisation specialised in comparing international qualifications.
One of the eligibility criteria is that you have at least one of the following subjects: mathematics, economics, or business studies.
English language skills
In case you do not hold an English secondary school diploma (diploma granted in a non EEA country) or you have not taken English as an exam subject (diploma granted in the EEA) prior to your enrolment for an English Bachelor programme, you must show an IELTS or TOEFL test. Contrary to what Studielink tells you, you have to register for this test yourself.
Scores
The minimum overall band score for the IELTS test (academic version) for all English Bachelor programmes is a 6.0. For the TOEFL test a minimum score of 550 (paper based version), 213 (computer based version) or 80 (internet based version) is required. An IELTS or TOEFL test is valid for two years. The test must be valid at the start of the academic year. For more information on registering for these tests, go to the TOEFL or IELTS websites.

Scholarships are very popular nowadays and a subject considered by nearly every student who decides to study abroad. In the following sections we will try to give you the most recent and essential information about scholarship opportunities for international students in the Netherlands.
Scholarships in your home country
If you’re an international student it’s worth checking out if any scholarships are available in your home country. For example, American students can apply for a Fulbright scholarship and there is an EU-South Africa Scholarship programme for South African students. Your country may offer similar grants. For more information or application forms contact your local Dutch embassy - or ask your present college or university if you are coming here for a bachelor programme. www.grantfinder.nl also has some useful information on scholarships.
Nuffic
The Netherlands Organization for International Cooperation in Higher Education (Nuffic) offers a variety of additional scholarships for students from all over the world. Erasmus Mundus is a new European Commission programme that aims to improve the quality of European higher education and encourage co-operation with countries outside the EU.
