Location of The Hague University of Applied Sciences

Most of the things you see around you everyday are made through chemical processes. Medicines, make up, paints, gadgets, gasoline, energy - not to mention food and drink. To produce them, the world´s biggest multinationals rely on people with the kind of skills you´ll develop on our Bachelor´s of Process and Food Technology programme.

Professional environment

You´ll spend time during the programme working with a real company, on real projects and work placements. International companies are very much involved in the curriculum. During the PFT programme you will visit these companies and guest lectures from the various companies will teach in the programme. So there is a strong link with the professional world. You´ll also learn how to plan, write and present reports in a professional environment. As well as developing technical knowledge and skills, you´ll develop the social skills you need to succeed.

International outlook

If you want to work for a multinational, it´s essential to be able to work with people from other countries and cultures. That international outlook is what sets our programme apart. Our staff and students represent over 30 different nationalities. And on campus you will find more than 100 different nationalities present. That makes The Hague University the most international university inHolland. You´ll work in multicultural teams on group projects, and learn to embrace other ways of thinking.

Some of the world´s biggest and best-known multinationals are right on our doorstep - Shell, Unilever. We regularly talk to the business community about our curriculum, to make sure its really relevant to the working world.

Contents

We offer a four-year programme, as well as a fast track three-year intensive course, in Process and Food Technology.

Every year is divided into 2 semesters, and each semester into terms. You´ll be assessed at the end of each term in some way - by a test, report, project or presentation. You´ll be marked on how well you work as part of a group, too.

Study time

Every week, you´ll spend no more than 15 hours in class. But you´ll be expected to put in a full 40 hours of study every week - working on projects, preparing for classes and exams.

Credits

For each part of the programme you complete, you´re awarded a mark. If your mark is 6 (out of 10) or higher, you get credits. To graduate, you need 240 credits, in total.

Content

The programme involves a mix of classroom tuition, lectures, group activities, projects and lab work. You’ll look at seven different ‘themes’:

  • Food products and processing
  • Inorganic products
  • Water treatment
  • Organic products
  • Responsible industrial operation
  • (Food) polymer technology
  • (Food/chemical) process technology

Your lessons will give you the knowledge and skills you need to complete the projects in each term. You’ll study general subjects, like math, physics and chemistry – as well as learning how to use actual equipment, like reactors, heat exchangers and distillation towers. And you’ll also be trained in presentation, reporting and communication.

Major-minor

You can choose a `minor´ subject to specialise in, to make your degree more targeted to the kinds of careers and opportunities you want. You can specialise in your own field, to deepen your knowledge. Or you can minor in something completely different, like management, to broaden your job opportunities.

In your final year, you can choose a `ribbon´ minor - either an in-depth corporate project, another specialisation, or a pre-Master´s course. The pre-Master´s course is run jointly with the Delft University of Technology - (TU Delft) the perfect preparation for a Master´s in Biochemical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or Life Science and Technology.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
