Public management with a focus on safety and security. Safety and Security Management Studies offer an opportunity to develop competencies aimed at adding value to the public governance of safety and security for those who want to make a difference in the public service.
Safety and security as public interests can only be understood set within an international context. However, the public governance of safety and security can only be effective taking local considerations into account. Connecting the global and the local is a focus of Safety and Security Studies at The Hague University.
Safety and Security Studies focus on India, Brazil, Morocco, Southern Africa, the United States for institutional cooperation.
International City of Peace, Justice, Safety and Security
The Hague is an exciting place to study safety and security management. The city is the administrative centre of The Netherlands and hosts a range of national, European and international organisations in the field of safety and security, peace and justice. The Hague University partners with many of them. During the four year course, students will have the opportunity to have internships at a range of international organisations in the field.
Key elements:
Safety and Security Management Studies is aimed to train you to be a professional, harness your academic insights and channel them into the public governance of safety and security, without losing sight of the importance of the citizens you will be serving.
Safety and Security Management Studies sets standards for professionalism. These are defined in the competencies that students develop throughout the modules. Each module has a clear set of learning goals. At the end of the module students are tested along these goals.
Students are also invited to test the learning environment on the basis of the question: "Were you offered the opportunity to develop the set of competencies?" In other words, students have an input in developing quality in education. This is also an element of the learning process.
`Making things work...´
Safety and Security Management Studies offers a four year full time course. The course offers a student what is necessary to develop professional competencies required to make the public governance of safety and security work.
Modules
Each of the four years consists of four modules. The module programme offers three courses, a project reflecting practical and professional aspects of safety and security, personal coaching and a professional abilities training.
Important aspect of Safety and Security Management Studies is that these modules can be offered separately. The Hague University partners with educational institutes and non-governmental organisations throughout the world. In partnership modules in Safety and Security Management Studies are offered locally. Target groups are those who are active in the field and want to further develop their competencies.
In the second year of the programme you are invited to choose from a range of minor courses to complement the Safety and Security Management Studies curriculum. There are two possibilities. One is to opt for one of the minors that provide the possibility to deepen your knowledge of a specific safety and security issue. The second possibility is to choose one of the many minor programmes provided by other The Hague University departments.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

If you have a non-Dutch diploma
We´ll need to assess your secondary school certificate, before we decide on your eligibility. To make sure your certificate is judged fairly, we work together with NUFFIC, an organisation specialised in comparing international qualifications.
One of the eligibility criteria is that you have at least one of the following subjects: mathematics, economics, or business studies.
In case you do not hold an English secondary school diploma (diploma granted in a non EEA country) or you have not taken English as an exam subject (diploma granted in the EEA) prior to your enrolment for an English Bachelor programme, you must show an IELTS or TOEFL test. Contrary to what Studielink tells you, you have to register for this test yourself.
Scores
The minimum overall band score for the IELTS test (academic version) for all English Bachelor programmes is a 6.0. For the TOEFL test a minimum score of 550 (paper based version), 213 (computer based version) or 80 (internet based version) is required. An IELTS or TOEFL test is valid for two years. The test must be valid at the start of the academic year.
