MML is for academically ambitious students who wish to maximise the depth and breadth of their expertise in two language areas, and to develop their research skills beyond undergraduate level.
The first two years are identical to the BA, but are followed by two years of highly specialised study (the equivalent of the final year at BA). These two years include M-level training in research methods and critical concepts. Students complete two M-level dissertations, one in each language. The programme involves four years of study in Manchester, with a range of options on the period of time spent abroad (minimum of 8 weeks in each country) representing a unique opportunity to make the most of your Modern Languages degree. MML French and German gives you a comprehensive grounding in French language, literature, culture, history and linguistics. It enables you to become proficient enough in French to live and work effectively in a French-speaking environment.
Your studies in German will give you the opportunity to study German literature, culture, history and linguistics. You will develop a solid grounding in German language, proficient enough in German to live and work effectively in a German-speaking environment.
Throughout your course you will be trained in modern spoken and written French by following a high level core language course.
You also take a set of broad-based content courses - they are designed to give you an essential grounding in key areas of French culture (especially visual studies), literature, history, society and linguistics. Some of the content teaching on these courses, in the first and subsequent years, is in English, so that you can focus fully on the new concepts introduced to you and can hone not only your French language skills, but also your expression and accuracy in English.
Core German language courses at all levels of study are complemented by a variety of other subject areas, and by a period spent in a German-speaking country. We have specialists in an unusually wide range of German-related subjects, so that you can focus on subjects that really appeal to you in your final year of study.
