The medical undergraduate programme at Manchester produces excellent well rounded scholars, scientists, professionals and practitioners. Students at Manchester can meet the core requirements of junior doctors and also, through personalised themes, create a bespoke education suited to their areas of interest.
The curriculum is fully updated to commence in 2011. Small group learning, using clinical cases or problems, is one of the key learning methods with structured support throughout the course. There is integration of science and clinical learning throughout all phases of the curriculum.
As students progress, there is an increasing emphasis on excellence in clinical learning, applying scientific knowledge and concepts as they are learnt.
Students start with a one year transition studying the foundations of the biological, social, behavioural and clinical sciences underpinning medicine. This is followed by a three year intermediate phase acquiring clinical competence. The final phase integrates learning from phases I and II to allow students to take on supervised responsibility for patient care.
Students may enter this programme with the appropriate qualifications (see entry requirements), or if they have successfully completed the Foundation Year (A104). The School aims to recruit from a broad range of the community. The outreach programmes are designed to encourage applications from able students from all backgrounds.
Every student follows a personalised theme throughout the undergraduate programme. An example of this is the European studies option. Students can expand on this theme during an intercalated year or choose a new area of interest for their intercalated year.
Intercalated degree option
A range of Intercalated degrees are available within the 5-year programme, enabling students to interrupt the MBChB for one year (after either Year 2, 3 or 4) to complete a BSc (Hons) or a Masters degree within a medically-related specialist area. A Masters in Research focuses on medical research, giving students the skills they need to pursue a career in academic medicine.
MBChB (with European Studies)
In addition to studying on the MBChB, students can apply to enrol on the European Studies option during Year 1. During Years 1 to 4, students will develop their knowledge and enhance their skills in the selected language by attending weekly classes. In Year 5, if an adequate level of proficiency is attained, students undertake a substantial placement at one of our partner universities in Europe. The Medical School has established excellent working relationships with a number of univeristies across Europe over a number of years and we know that our students receive a high quality formative experience during these placements.
