Computing systems are at the heart of all successful businesses. The development of good quality software appropriate to the needs of business requires an understanding of both computing and the business environment. By combining the study of these two fields, these degree programmes provide you with the skills needed for a career developing computing systems for business or providing the computer expertise needed by business to buy computing systems.
The business aspects of these programmes will give you an appreciation of the whole business environment from management and marketing, through the financial aspects and human resource management, to the development of technology for application to new products, processes and services. This is combined with core computer science topics in programming, software development and databases, and the opportunity to take some topics from specialised areas such as software engineering and artificial intelligence.
This is a four year programme and involves you undertaking a one year work placement in industry between the second and third years of your study at Manchester. Besides the money that you earn during this year, you also gain practical experience that can be invaluable both in your final year project and when competing for graduate jobs. Students with industrial experience not only tend to improve their final degree performance but also tend to develop clearer ideas about their future career path.
