Industrial design is a combination of applied art and applied science, where the aesthetics, ergonomics and usability of products may be improved for marketability and production. BA and BSc students enrol onto a common Year 1 programme and choose, with staff help, which pathway to follow at the start of Year 2 thus ensuring a well-informed decision. The courses embrace a range of skills which include sketch drawing, physical model-making (aesthetic, ergonomic and prototypes), computer aided design skills (including rapid prototyping) together with technical and contextual inputs. .Both routes integrate an optional 48 week work experience period during Year 3.
The role of an industrial / Product designer is to create design solutions of form, usability, physical ergonomics, marketing, brand development and sales. Everywhere you turn, virtually everything you use, the things you own, things you covet; a designer has had his or her hands on it.Why are some products so much more desirable than others? You have your suspicions, because you are an ideas person, and you would love to put those ideas into practice. This award winning course is just what you have been seeking. Its aim is to help you to become a professional designer capable of realising your creative design ideas. You will develop the technical know-how to solve problems and develop ideas for mass production. The course has a vocational emphasis based on long established industry links, which results in valuable live project work, and which underpins an excellent graduate career record.
