Telecommunications has undergone tremendous growth over the last decade, and it is to be expected that this field will continue to grow in the future. Innumerable services (the mobile telephone, Internet, television) require the appropriate development and implementation of communications systems. Society´s demand for highly qualified professionals to be in charge of communications system design, operation and management is greater and greater, since services offered by companies, public services, leisure, etc. depend more and more on telecommunications running well.
Additionally, the communications field is constantly evolving and requires professionals who complement the specific qualifications in their particular field with solid training in the fundamental concepts of telecommunication technology, so that they can successfully adapt to new technologies that appear. In this regard, it is useful to emphasize this degree´s transformation into a four-year degree, according to the model proposed by the European Higher Education Area ("Bologna"), as it stresses more general training, making later professional development easy for future degree holders, and the students´ training in transversal capabilities such as learning ability or teamwork.
The content of this degree include the fundamentals of signal handling and propagation in different physical media, as well as the necessary knowledge of electronics to develop communications systems.
This degree trains graduates in the following areas:
* Professional: In-depth knowledge of the specific technologies related to signal propagation in different physical media (antennas, optic fiber). Knowledge of signal handling (audio, video, etc.), both analog and digital. Ability to design, implement, operate and manage complex communication systems. Work habits and independent performance of responsibilities that have been taken on. Capacity of analysis and synthesis, and critical approach to technological reality. Ability to work on a team and good organizational skills.
* Economic-business, which enables them to understand the focus of engineering as an economic activity carried out within a more general framework although preferably linked to the Information Society; ability to understand the underlying business model for communications-related technology.
* Social-humanist, to exercise the profession in a collective environment (techniques of oral and written expression, languages, etc.), to know the reality of their professional environment (regulatory framework, regulation) and to gain awareness of the social dimension of their activities (security, environmental protection, professional ethics,...), from a critical point of view.
