Location of University of Latvia

The programme combines language studies with business studies and aims at preparing students for international careers in enterprises and institutions operating in the modern economic and political environment. The language studies in the programme offer a choice between three language modules: English-French, English-Spanish and English-German.

All three modules comprise studying Business English, Financial English, English for Law, as well as studying general and business aspects of the other modern language (e.g. French Language in the Modern Discourse, Business French, Business Spanish, etc.). A third language can be also chosen.The programme provides cultural studies through such study courses as Intercultural Communication, Intercultural Business Relations, a.o. The business studies comprise the basic management studies as well as EU and international market specific study courses (e.g. Management, Marketing, Business in the European Union, International Economic Relations).

The programme comprises courses which develop students’ translation, intercultural communication, teamworking and other skills required for employability.

Opportunlities after graduation

Advanced competence in two foreign languages and a working knowledge of a third foreign language along with a thorough grounding in business proves attractive to domestic and international employers. Graduates will be able to work as senior specialists, project managers and assistants to directors or to heads of units. They will be able to continue their education in Master’s degree programmes in Humanities, Master of Business Administration programmes and second level professional programmes.

Requirements

  • General secondary education diploma;

Enrollment criteria:

The selection criteria are based on the following grades recorded in the general secondary education diploma supplement (grade achievement):

satisfactory grades in English or German or French¹ and in Mathematics, GPA (grade point average) and a certificate of the Latvian language (if available)²

¹The grade in English or German or French in the secondary education diploma can be replaced with the results of one of the following internationally recognized language tests:

English:

1) TOEFL IBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet Based Test) score at least 80 or TOEFL PBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language Paper Based Test) score at least 550;

2) IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score at least 6;

3) Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English – C level; Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English – B level;

  • French:

1) DELF (Diplôme d'études en langue française) - B2 level;

2) DALF (Diplôme approfondi de langue française) - at least C1 level;

3) TCF (Test de connaissance du français) - at least 400 points;

4) TEF (Test d’Evaluation du Français) - at least 541 points;

  • German:

1) DSD (Deutsche Sprachdiplom der Kultusministerkonferenz) - at least level 2;

2) DSH (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang) - at least level 2;

3) TestDaF (Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache) - at least level 4 in all test sections;

4) KDS (Kleines Deutsches Sprachdiplom);

5) GDS (Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom);

6) ZOP (Zentrale Oberstufenprüfung);

²EU citizens can register for the competition for a government-financed study place if one of the following Latvian language certificates is provided:

  • certificate of national language issued by the Centre for Curriculum Development and Examinations of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Latvia - at least level 1B (issued as of 01.09.2000 to 31.08.2009);
  • certificate of national language issued by the State Education Centre of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Latvia - at least level A2 (issued as of 01.09.2009);
  • certificate issued by the Language Centre of the University of Latvia. The acceptable minimum grade is 4 (almost satisfactory).

Please note! As the language of instruction is English, English language proficiency must be provided in any case.
