The Internet boom means that communication networks and their services are present in all areas of society (now it truly is an Information Society, in which information is available anytime, anywhere). From the business world to the home, education, social areas, not to mention public services ... communication has become essential for life. In order to implement, design and develop networks and communications (Internet, ADSL, mobile networks, etc.) and their services (such as websites, e-mail, Peer2Peer services, electronic commerce, etc.), a professional profile that is specifically qualified in this area is required, the Telematics Engineering graduate.
The speed at which technology evolves indicates an expectation of the growing need for professionals who are experts in Telematics. In order to meet this demand, Telematics Engineering graduates should have a solid education in the area of telematics, as well as in the fundamentals of communication technologies, and a good ability to design and program quality software on which communication services depend.
It is interesting to emphasize this degree´s transformation into a four-year degree, according to the model proposed by the European Higher Education Area ("Bologna"), as it stresses more general training, making later professional development easy for future degree holders, and the students´ training in transversal capabilities such as learning ability or teamwork.
The content of this degree includes, in addition to a classic education in electronics and signal processing, the study of data transport technology, programming techniques oriented towards communications, and communications protocols.
This degree trains graduates in the following areas:
* Professional: In-depth knowledge of the specific technologies related to communication networks (such as Internet) and telematics applications and services (such as Web services, e-mail...).and the ability to apply them in different environments Ability to access new knowledge in the specific area of technology related to communication networks and services and, in general, to telecommunications. Work habits and independent performance of responsibilities that have been taken on. Capacity of analysis and synthesis, and critical approach to technological reality. Capability of abstract reasoning regarding abstract systems, algorithmic reasoning. Capacity to coordinate and develop complex programming projects. Ability to work on a team and good organizational skills.
* Economic-business, which enables them to understand the focus of engineering as an economic activity carried out within a more general framework although preferably linked to the Information Society, ability to understand the underlying business model for communications-related technology
* Social-humanist, to exercise the profession in a collective environment (techniques of oral and written expression, languages, etc.), to know the reality of their professional environment (regulatory framework, regulation) and to gain awareness of the social dimension of their activities (security, environmental protection, professional ethics,...), from a critical point of view.
