Location of Avans University of Applied Sciences
The Avans Prep Course is offered to students who require additional domain knowledge and English language training for admission to the Bachelor’s degree courses in
- International Business and Management Studies (IBMS)
- Finance and Control (F&C)
- Environmental Science for Sustainable Energy and Technology (ESSET)
- International Maintenance Management (IMM)
at Avans University of Applied Sciences.
This Prep Course forms an introduction to our Bachelor programmes and helps you to acquire sufficient command of the English language, Dutch culture, specific domain knowledge and ICT, to enable your smooth entry into our 4-year Bachelor programmes.
Depending on your level of English language proficiency, you may enrol for a full-year or a half-year Preparatory Course. By participating in this course in an active and responsible way, we expect you to pass the IELTS* exam with an overall band score of at least 6 at the end of the Prep Course. This is a legal prerequisite for enrolment of non-European students for Dutch international bachelor programmes. Moreover, you will be well prepared and ready to enrol for our bachelor programmes and have a successful entry.
Note:All four-year English bachelor study programmes at Avans University of Applied Sciences start in September. Make sure your Preparatory Course is attuned to the bachelor study programme you will follow.
If they are not attuned to one another, please be aware that your visa is valid only (and you can only stay in the Netherlands) if you have paid your tuition fees and are following lessons. So if you finish your Preparatory Course in February, you may not be able to stay in the Netherlands until you start your bachelor study programme (in September).
A residence permit for the Preparatory Course is valid for one year only and cannot be extended
Contents
The course consists of an introduction and a language programme to ensure your smooth entry into our international 4-year bachelor programmes. The course provides classes and training sessions in:
- English. There will be English language lessons preparing you for band 6.0 of the Academic Module of the IELTS exam;
- Domain specific knowledge, such as an introduction to the bachelor programme;
- An introduction to Western European and Dutch culture: introduction to Western European culture, customs and politics;
- Study skills: becoming acquainted with our educational system and working methods and our way of assessment, relevant communication and ICT skills, speaking, writing, presentations, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, learning to work in our digital learning environment Blackboard.
Besides the above-mentioned classes, there are fieldwork activities and excursions and self-study periods. You are expected to prepare for the classes, make assignments and do exercises outside the classroom environment. Sufficient time spent on self-study outside classes is essential for a successful completion of this course.
The Avans Prep Course will end with an official Academic IELTS exam. On successful completion of the programme you will receive a certificate issued by Avans University of Applied Sciences, together with an official IELTS certificate.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Please note:If you have an IELTS score of 5.5, we recommend you start the preparatory course in February (half year programme), so that it ties in with your continuation course. All four-year bachelor's degree programmes at Avans University of Applied Sciences start in September.
