Industrial engineering is a branch of engineering concerned with the utilization and improvement of systems, that are required for the design, production and distribution of a product or service. This includes the effective and efficient use of resources, and looks at such factors as time, labor, budgets, energy, information systems, machinery and materials,.Industrial engineering has a different perspective, when compared with the other fields of engineering. The most important difference is that industrial engineers apply a `systems approach´ to problems. They concentrate on the `big picture´, as well as the individual components or structures, which are relevant to the industrial engineering discipline. The second characteristic of industrial engineering is its focus on the human factor, since optimizing the socio-technical systems, requires consideration of the employee´s working conditions. This includes the suitability of the person for the job, as well as the work and safety environment. Therefore, as well as being integrated into the natural sciences, industrial engineering is also related to the social sciences. In accordance with the systems approach, industrial engineering is an interdisciplinary field that is based upon mathematics, operations research, statistics, information sciences, social and natural sciences, together with engineering analysis and design techniques.
