Like the Department of Interior Design, the Department of Architecture belongs to the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture. Despite some differences, much of the curriculum in these two departments follow similar lines which mostly run in parallel. This is so not only because the two disciplines are close relatives of each other, but also because it facilitates transfer of students from one discipline to the other if they wish to do so.
The principal objective of this education is to teach students the important skills they would need in the future. Moreover, it is thought to be essential that students acquire a sincere love of this profession, if they are to be successful in the future. In this direction, besides obligatory practice in offices or the construction sites, students will be introduced the realities of professional life under dynamic circumstances – may this be within or outside the academic life.
Architecture demands that students develop their “creative skills”. It also requires that students develop their cultural background. Students will, therefore, be asked to participate in various cultural activities and develop their entrepreneurial capacities. All the efforts will be spent in order to make their education a colorful one.
Traditional architecture and building techniques occupy a part of the curriculum. But students will also be taught today’s techniques and materials. Each student will be expected to have acquired a good skill in computer-aided-design by the time of his graduation. Together with other skills, each student will have reached the capacity of finding an employment abroad easily. This is demanded by the current relationships of Turkey with the European Union and the international arena of architecture.
A good knowledge of the history of civilizations, arts, architecture and finally of modern and contemporary architecture is considered as a must, or a prerequisite of, successful design. The student will be brought from the past to the present, and carried to the future of the world of architecture and other design disciplines.
The number of courses and their hours decrease through the years until the last semesters. On the other hand, the numbers and hours of elective courses increase in order to open the way for specialization in different fields of architecture.
In summary, this program aims to educate students to be good designers. With their competence in foreign languages, their developed entrepreneurial capacities, and finally, a sound knowledge of architecture, each student will become a successful professional.
